There is still the remnants of a once pretty good size truckstop from that era at the split of 321 and 301 in ulmer, sc. I keep wanting to whoop in and look around when I go by. I even found an old pic of a post card from the 60’s online.
SC ULMERS South Carolina 1960s INTERSTATE TRUCK TERMINAL Pure Oil Chrome VG+ .2 | #1815695485
sadly this is how it looks today.

Something about remembering old times, one comes to mind. You would have to be standing in front of him as he told it to really get the humor, but I will try.
Jerry Smith, one of the Garrard drivers who went to Vera Cruz with us drove on, saved his money, learned the business and had become an OO. Was pulling a cattle rack mostly but when Carolina set up CA operations; they were paying phenomenal money for power, Memphis to CA. So Jerry just goes in, sets up with them and starts pulling doubles out of Memphis. He is telling me this sometimes in the late 80's when we met at some shop in Memphis.
He had worked up to a cabover Kenworth with a 500 Cummins. Not clear on new truck or just engine, but it was still virgin cause he did not know how fast it would run.
So Jerry has hooked 2 in Memphis, supposed to drop off one in Denver, swap in an empty and next swap in Nevada. Lined out, wound, and gone...
Cruising toward Glenwood Canyon he is letting it go a little and decides to wind it out, see what it has for the record. Said it had reached 95 and still climbing and he is pleased. Glances over in the EB lane and see a patrol car. So; instant calculations say,...I keep punching it, he has to go on to (last crossover he recalls) turn across, then catch me. Ha. I will be over the Utah line before that.
Well , Jerry misplaced the crossover, says next thing he see is red coming up. Pulls over, the man pulls up, Jerry gets out (he always was humorous), starts back and begins to laugh...(Now here is what you have to visualize)
Jerry said he had spotted the little Ford sitting there, steam vapor coming up from the hood and appeared to be huffing a little on its tires...Like WHEW....
The man is not amused at all, especially after he stops laughing and ask the man with a straight face why he has stopped him...Jerry could do innocence.
Apparently the man had not shot him on radar cleanly, but he knew after the chase he was gonna get some blood. He says he is going to inspect the rig. "And if I find one spot of grease, you will sit here until this rig is factory rebuilt..." Jerry said the man got out his creeper, pulled on coveralls and went to work. An hour later (Jerry was figuring on planning BK) the man crawls out, removes coveralls and admits he found nothing. Tells him "Move on Safely.
Jerry died several years ago, but I still remember when he came to work at Garrard, we made the Mexico trip, and when he got the KW. Great guy.....dwells40, kemosabi49, BennysPennys and 8 others Thank this. -
1956/57. 1st load of eggs to NYC, loaded Osage, IA. Directions were: Go to Tooley's in Jersey City, get a union man to go over with you to unload.
Come back and see the old man there for something to Atlanta. Union man charged me $9.00, made the receipt for $10.00. Brotherhood knockdown.
Went out on Long Island to Riverhead, loaded LI potatoes for Atlanta.
I have two postcards from there. Old man who did the brokerage was an ex con. Did his time at the "Castle on the Hudson". Sing Sing Prison.
Bridgework right upper background is the Pulaski Skyway.. Lone pump right side probably the diesel pump.

Inquiring minds want to know who took the nibble out of the corner of the one on the left? That the cook's test bite?
