Why do they need a lumper in the first place? What makes grocery warehouses ect, any different than say a lumberyard or a steel processor or any other business that ships or receives products. I will never understand why anyone would pay someone to unload their truck. I'm trying that at my house, for now on Fed Ex and UPS there's a $10 charge to set what I ordered on my porch.:biggrin_25526:

UPS wouldnt go for that. hehe.

There are some things i've almost bought on ebay that i wouldve had to ship via conway LTL though, and i'd have to pick it up at the terminal (a lot cheaper than door-to-door service obviously). Wonder what would happen if i tried to charge them to put it in my car..

Now to some that sounds stupid but it's exactly what these places are doing every day. We owned a lumberyard for probably 25yrs, guess I should have been charging to unload every truck. :biggrin_2554:

Grocery warehouses do not charge to unload your truck. The way it works is the grocery warehouse allows another company (lumper company) to unload trucks in their property. This cost them nothing and saves them money, since they no longer need to hire anyone to complete this idiotic/repetitive task. Saves money once gone on payroll, benefits, and other liabilities. Why pay someone when it can be done for free and with no headaches? Forget the truckers. Forget the brokers. Hey, they might even be charging the lumpers for the right to make money on their property!:biggrin_25512:

Yes, I think that some lumper services pay for the opportunity to have the business.

Been trucking on and off for 35 years and every time I pay a lumper it pisses me off. Especially when the lumpers make as much money on the load as I did. Last week had 2 stops on an $1800/1200 mile load and lumpers totaled $345. JB Hunt tried to make me be their bank and pay the lumpers and collect it later - hell no. Then they had the appointment wrong and I had to wait 11 hours to unload. They said I'd get $50 an hour detention time. Next day they ask "whats a fair price for your waiting?" WTF? We agreed to 50 bucks an hour. Eventually they said they could only pay $300. They had to cheat me for the last 150 bucks, can't help themselves, it's in the DNA of every broker. What can you do - nothing. How do you think the JB Hunts, Swifts, CH Robinsons et all got to be so huge?

But they do pay.The broker charges the shipper, the shipper adds the price to shipping, the receiver pays the bill for the product being delivered.

That's why P+G got sick of the bs and placed on their bill of lading driver will not sort and segregate. There is a 1-800 number to call if anyone tries to charge for lumpers.I called it once, very nice young man took the information about load, said hold on a second, politely asked me to request the bill of lading back and to return the load to Jackson.Funny all of a sudden the receiver wanted the product and unloaded it themselves:biggrin_2555:
