Any NYC drivers, what is this abstract I keep seeing?

I might have to move out of my home and I've been thinking of NYC as I will also have to give up the car and I just sold my bike yesterday.

While searching through the job sites in NYC I keep seeing the posters asking for an "abstract." WTF is that? Is it the same as an MVR?

Another question is, aren't most of the driving jobs in NYC union jobs?

yes rollover, an abstract is your motor vehicle record. most if not all of the common carriers are union, but there are a lot of smaller outfits that aren't. where in the city are you looking? did you want to stay local there or OTR?

i hope not. i found conway has openings in ny state, for the city it's maspeth, if he wants the island it's farmingdale

duane reade in maspeth has a part time driver position and it's union, but since cvs just bought them who knows how long that'll last.

fedex has a couple openings in west babylon

farther out, ferraro foods in piscataway has an opening and then even farther out than that, wegemans needs a full time local in pottsville. from what i hear that is a good job.

alied building products openings all over the 5, bronx, long island city, hicksville and staten island, but they require a hand unload so i doubt he'd want that. but.... you never know, it might help someone else.

Conway in Elmsford was hiring a few months ago. I didn't take it because they wanted Hazmat. If you've got Hazmat check out the home heating oil companies. Also there's a few Coke distributers in the area. Hope you get a good job Rollover, I've lived in NYC for 30 years and it's to #### expensive for me.

Sorry, but brain surgery makes me forget short term stuff right now! We're looking at Williamsburg area to live but the job, IDK yet. I won't drive yet until all my little brain cells are all marching to the same drummer!Or unless I can finish this book I'm writing! I don't think I'll do OTR any more as local will pay better than OTR in NYC. Now rent and buying there is insane! But I'll save more getting rid of the car and insurance and fuel costs! We're still up in the air about the move! I'm pretty knowledgeable about NYC and a lot of the carriers and receivers there so I hope getting a job when I'm back to normal won't be too bad. Heck I'll even look at a limo or taxi job! In fact that will be like therapy to me! Heck I might just buy a 150cc bike and do the bike delivery deal! LOL. But thanks for the info on that abstract question and the union deal! I hav an old and when I say old union card it goes back to 94 when I paid my dues! I worked all of 2 months as a Teamster before I got off that horse when this local here didn't do a thing for me when I needed them! But that unions for you!

    Thanks again

I'd say TLC work is a totally different kinda crazy than OTR work. I've done both. And what made me a good Limo guy probably wouldn't fly very well with trucking companies *officially*.

To run in Manhattan you've got to know how to "surf" the avenues. (little trade secret here) 3rd avenue goes north and 2nd goes uptown. If you time the lights right you can get from 14th to Harlem non-stop. Better than the FDR wich tends to fill up with "civilians". But do do it right you've got 5 lanes wide and only about a 5 block window to work with. Frankly the first corner at Taledega looks easy by comparison. You've got to jockey for positon at all times, look out for cabs looking to drop/pu, or double parked vehicles. Not to mention the MTA busses which seem to swing into traffic with ZERO reguard. It's a rush, but it's not for ever one.

Oh it kinda works on the West side too, but between Broadway and the Tunnel Traffic it's not as consistant.

Anyway Rollover you wanna be a hack, take the L train to 14th and 3rd and flag a cab up to 125th street. See what I'm talking about.

Oh and the Bronx is still cheaper to live than those trendy neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Try Moshulu Park, or Parkchester. Also Inwood in upper Manhattan is a great little secret neighborhood. There's lots of nice stuff east of B'way up there. More affordable in the flats though, and you've got that big housing project at the end of the Harlem River Drive.

My In-laws live in Kingsbridge, I've never had a problem there. Can't recomend it much though, not many people can sleep with the 4 running by the window.
