Mid 90’s I was introduced to a girl that lived in LaMesa New Mexico. Back in those days, we used the phone cards and pay phones and still wrote letter. So, she and I began to get serious and I told her that I wanted to talk to her father (I am old school). She and her sister pick me up in ElPaso and takes me to Juarez. Oh yeah, I was scared, BUT like the great Ric Flair always said, “TO BE THE MAN….”
Her dad had this big ostrich ranch south of Juarez. Speaking of the patriarchy, the whole entire family was there, 30-40 cars, uncles aunts, brothers sisters, with my girl’s father at the head. His name was Rey, which means King, and he was that. So, I am sitting and all of these people are talking in Spanish and I am wondering if I would live to see America again. My girl was in the kitchen helping her mother (that’s what traditional women do). She came out of the kitchen and sat next to me.

Senor Rey, I want to speak to you about your daughter. I want to date your daughter with the goal of marriage, but I want your blessing. And while dating your daughter I will abide by your rules. (There. I said what I came to say)

Her mother stuck her head out of the kitchen to take a second look at me in awe.

“I’d rather my daughter date her own kind but because you speak to me as a Man, I shall give you the respect of a Man. Always respect my daughter and have her home at 11.”
(His speaking to me kinda reminded me of the Outlaw Josey Wales when Josey went to make a pact with 10Bears. I came there to die with you or live with you.)

Anyway, this was the old school way. If you wanted a girl, you had to go speak to a Man and convince him that you too were a Man. Of course this is now an ancient archaic way of doing things and it is demeaning to women, but
1. It protected women.
2. It made for much higher caliber women.

“But Six, women don’t need protection from men!”, says the unhappy morbidly obese bum magnet single mom, never married with 3 baby daddy that looks more like a farm animal than a human female.

Sure. Whatever.

 

For me, it was my grandfather. Pops was the eldest of 21 kids. Grew up on a farm, Sgt in the army, part of the greatest generation. Married to two wives, buried both of them. His mom was the meanest and angriest woman I had ever seen. We went to her farm for a family reunion and she accused my brother and I of killing one of her chickens. She’s screaming and frothing at the mouth and I was terrified. Pops walked into the house and there was this huge calm that came over the house. My dad was built like a fullback and was a rough dude, but Pops had this otherworldly strength about him. He looked at his mom and she instantly shuts down.

When my dad decided that he no longer wanted to be a family man, my mom and I warred. I blamed her for dad leaving and she hated me because I look like my dad. It was Pops who told me to never argue with women. All the screaming and yelling and punching holes through doors and windows and walls. I didn’t understand. You can be the toughest guy in town, whip 10 guys at a time, but if a woman can push your buttons, guess what you are?

 

This doctor had a female patient that he was crazy about. “I don’t know what it is about her…she drives me wild!” Well, against his better judgement, they ended up having sex.

A few days later, Doc is in his office doing paperwork and his conscience starts to bother him. LittleAngel appears on his right shoulder pointing fingers and scolding, “Doc, you know you’re wrong! What you did was completely unethical! Having sex with a patient is against the creed! That’s why your conscience is bothering you and that’s why I am here!”

Little Devil appears on his left shoulder. Doc sadly looks at Little Devil for an encouraging thought. With an extremely worried look on his face, Little Devil says “Ummm, Doc…you’re a VETERINARIAN!”

 

Son in law is spraying color this morning. One month left to finish the 77 CJ5….
