US: 5,000 Warplanes Left to Rot in Arizona Desert
Tucson, United States - February 20, 2025 Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz.—In a sprawling, sun-scorched expanse of Arizona, a chilling sight stretches across 2,600 acres: nearly 5,000 retired military aircraft, abandoned to time and the elements. The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group—known hauntingly as "The Boneyard"—stands as a silent testament to the end of an era for these once-mighty war machines. Here, crews toil under the relentless desert sun, preserving the skeletal remains of these aircraft for potential resurrection, scavenging parts to keep active fleets aloft, and conducting depot-level maintenance to breathe new life into select planes. From fighters to bombers, these relics of Air Force history await an uncertain fate—some destined for rebirth in support of ongoing operations, others left to fade into oblivion.

But, I remember an article/articles years ago saying that kind of desert air was best for the planes. Something to do with the atmosphere as to why they don’t just rust and crumble….

Chinatown, flood, mjd4277 and 2 others Thank this.

Desert air doesn’t have as much moisture/humidity,which makes it ideal for aircraft storage.

Neat but sad place. Lots of history sitting out there . As far as using any of it , nope , most of those planes are far from usable and would take lots of money and time and parts ( most which are not made anymore ) to make flyable . (A7 - A6's).
Same with all those ships in storage on both coasts.
If it ever came down to using any of the stored planes or ships , we'd be in a real bad spot.
