I'm looking at a trailer in OK. I'm in TN. Ad says OK state sales tax will be applied. I wasn't thinking I had to pay this before when I bought my first trailer out of MN. I may just not remember.

Does this sound right? Is this a thing only in certain states? I was thinking taxes were paid locally when I tagged it.

This is not a new trailer, it's a couple years old.

I know OK has a rolling stock exemption on Rail cars and such but you will have to call there and ask if this also applies to interstate carriers buying rolling stock for use in interstate commerce.

By the way, this should be uniform across the country, no one should pay any sales tax for rolling stock.

In Michigan. sales tax is collected on every vehicle sold that is titled within the state. New and used every time it’s transferred to a new owner. The only exception is a sale between immediate family members.

    Not sure about Ok.

You are talking about private sales.
In Michigan everything you buy for an interstate trucking company is tax exempt (rolling stock). Trucks, trailers, parts, oil, whatever else

Guessing you are trying to purchase from a private party..if so I’d just call a dealership and ask what the protocol is for collecting sales tax.

    Siinman Thanks this.

No, it's a dealership. It's a Ritchie/Iron Planet auction. They state in the ad that OK sales tax will be collected at sale but I didn't think that was right.

I talked to Ritchie Bros. earlier and apparently it is correct. I will pay it at sale or back in my home state when I register. I will double check this of course but that's what the Ritchie person said.

    Siinman and Concorde Thank this.

Oklahoma is a destination based state so you would be required to pay whatever amount your state charges. Seller may be required by law to collect that amount and send it to your state.

I really don’t think you will pay Oklahoma sales tax on it..probably something lost in translation.

Bean Jr., Siinman and 86scotty Thank this.
