sorry i cant say i agree with the org poster here. my last run before i came home the weight on the load was 43,400 and with full fuel load i was right at 80k and yes i use my jakes on the down grades it helpped save my brakes and got me down the hill. and as for the signs sorry no engine brakes with that load i will take the ticket if the jakes save my ### and possibly yours.

All of the anwers quoted here are correct there are arguments for and against using jakes or engine brakes as truck drivers we should be awhere of other people in Built up areas and lay off the brakes there are other ways to slow down using your gear box for 1 is the best way you just ease off the acclerator and change down however most drivers like to use the jake as well as changing down it all comes down to how experinced the driver is all the learners and other drivers who don't care will use a jake regardless i guess it makes them feel big and tough look at me an my big rig and all the noise i can make its one of those Mars things, the only time i'll usually use a jake is down a steep mountain pass where there are no built up area's . But then i'm a real proffessional

the only time that i use my jakes is going down a hill or when comming to a stop sign. never when empty, don't need to. as for beening a "professional", i just do my job the best way i know how.
