Del Monte Foods files Chapter 11. This will be painful for some trucking and logistics operators, as Del Monte was a major shipper. It could also hurt any factoring company that bought receivables from Del Monte. Uber Freight (Transplace) is the number 2 creditor, hit with $9M in outstanding payments dued.

Yah know, I’ve been wondering why I haven’t seen any of the Del Monte loads lately and have a hunch that I know why.

I have run tons of their loads out of WA and really enjoyed dealing with them.

I suspect that it’s due to the SNAP cuts since all the loads I’ve done were to food banks etc.

I believe that’s what kept them in business (government subsidized) and it filled a need for the country. Unfortunately this will have serious implications with the farmers.

As far as Uber eating 9 million, I suspect it won’t hurt them one bit.

Yep I bet you are right on that one. I have only done a few loads with them over the years. Sad that they had to live off the government tit to keep afloat. Of course they will restructure and most likely be fine and cut all the fat in the company. Will be interesting to see if that is something they cut.

I’m sure it was a contract that they had to bid on. Nonetheless the repercussions from this will be interesting to say the least.

Maybe the farmers can send their corn etc to china and they can send it back in n cans.

Maybe John Deere didn’t make such a bad decision to move after all.

Funny you should mention that. I used to haul direct for a large farm (Perdue) and one run was loads of "organic" corn from China to silos.

The barges would dock and we'd load directly from them and deliver straight through. I've never bought another Perdue product again.

I don't trust China for a second to ensure that corn was truly organic and that corn was feeding animals labeled organic that are meant for human consumption.

I hauled a LOT,,L-O-T of Del Monte out of Wisconsin. Vegetables, mostly, corn, peas, all canned and weighed a ton, but after all, it was only "going on the rail". Most out of Sun Prairie, Lodi, S.Wis. N.Ill. and all going out west and all on BNSF trains. If a company like Del Monte can't make it, some stern warnings for the future, but who cares. eh?

DelMonte will survive. They'll trim some fat, close a few marginal operations, and screw who they can. Nothing personal, just business. They've been in business around here a long time
Chapter 11 is Financial Reorganization. It gives DelMonte some breathing room to restructure their debt and make the best deals they can with the people they owe money too. Be glad you're not one of them.
Look up "Soulless Corporate Monster" on Google and you'll probably find DelMonte at the top of the list.
And yeah, I used to sell peaches to them. When they bought out and closed down all their small competitors the ex-orchard price went right in the crapper.
We grow almonds now...and we don't sell to DelMonte.

I have hauled a bunch with Transplace in the past. Maybe they can withstand the hit too.

Yes, Uber Freight did acquire Transplace. The acquisition was finalized in November 2021 for $2.25 billion, according to Uber Investor Relations. This deal involved an all-cash transaction and included a $550 million investment in Uber Freight by Abu Dhabi Growth Fund, D1 Capital, and GCM Grosvenor.
The acquisition aimed to combine Transplace's managed transportation and logistics network with Uber Freight's technology platform, creating a more comprehensive freight ecosystem, according to Transport Topics. The combined entity is expected to offer shippers and carriers greater efficiency, transparency, and cost savings.
The Transplace brand is no longer used, with the company now operating under the Uber Freight name, according to Talking Logistics with Adrian Gonzalez.
