Trucking has gotten easier to qualify for in general. I entered the cr england training with a class of around 30-45 students, cannot remember for certain how many. But I do remember that by the end there were only 5 graduates. A lot of them just dropped out because they could not learn to shift gears in a ten speed comfortably. Now a days that is no longer a factor though as you can pass the cdl test in an automatic. So just having a cdl now does not make you stand out as much as before since it is easier to get one.

The things that will make you stand out is having a solid work history to show your integrity. Being flexible and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. Say you are doing otr one day and you have been sitting at a truck stop waiting to get another load and suddenly at 0230 in the morning your dispatcher calls you up in the middle of your sleep and says they found a load for you to pick up but you got to leave right now. Would you be able to jump on that load or would you want to go back to sleep and wait until morning to see if something else shows up?

Gotcha, I want to get all the endorsements and no restrictions for a manual I want to learn as much as possible. I’d wake my ### up I like driving at night anyway plus I’d be doing anything that company wanted for a year or two until I can maybe find something better.

It depends on company needs. I got into trucking at the age of 42. I went to RoehlS GYCDL program. At that time I had 1.5 years of current documented work history and undocumented history for 10+ years prior. They called my sister and that was good enough for them. I failed that and did private school and went to Schneider. They didnt even inquire about the company that was closed that I worked for 15 years. I guess if you have 1+ years of current work history that can be verified is acceptable by most.

I'm a drop out and never got my ged. Not sure if that's more for kids in their 20's that they check or just don't care.

In the current CDL job market -- it will be very difficult for you to score a starter gig....while in the Miami area.

Notice: I didn't say, "impossible" -- rather...I said, "very difficult".

    There's a difference.

Suggestion: If you're REALLY SERIOUS about pursuing a CDL class "A" career path -- consider relocating to an area with considerably more opportunities for rookies.

    Easy examples:
    • the northern half of Georgia (an excellent choice! :D)
    • the northern half of Alabama (can't be beat -- if you want to start out/get in flatbed...but move north of I-20)
    • even the western "panhandle" area of Florida would be much better (Pensacola).
    • The Mobile, AL area is another outstanding option -- that place is indeed a trucker's town (especially for tanker duty)
    Just some food for thought....

When you say relocating do you just mean applying to jobs in other states? Or would I actually have to prove a change of address and change housing?

I don’t mind going to other states for school and work but on my off time I’d like to keep the place I have now in FL it’s paid off and I like it for now at least.

You'll probably need your GED first. That's the first step. I'm sure some drivers never finished high school and managed to drive...while schools loosened the grip in some ways to grt your CDL, companies have tightened the grip to get hired. It's not a driver's market for jobs right now. You’re in Miami and Florida in general is probably the roughest state in terms of job prospects for truckers. Its even worse for a new driver. Companies may travel to Florida, but are hesitant to hire drivers out of Florida because it can be difficult to get them home, plus it'll most likely require the company to take a big loss on revenue. Getting a load out of Florida is next level difficult because there isn't a great deal of freight for the amount of trucks traveling through there. Stat that matters: in 16 years of being a company driver, I've taken only 9 loads to Florida.

To give an idea of what you're up against.....go to the job feature on here and put in the appropriate filters and see what comes up for openings.

Easy to get a high school diploma or GED the way 100's of truckers acquired theirs.
My cousin got his Bachelor's in Business from this site. Landed a very good job also with that degree.
Yeah, they're fake and the company doesn't hide that fact. Doubt any company is going to do a deep dive to verify a high school diploma or GED. Probably won't even have to show it; never heard of a trucking company that want to see it. It's a driving job, not an astronaut job you're applying for.
Nice item to frame and hang on the wall at home.
