    My two cents-

I am not surprised at anything NY does as releted to on-board electronics. They have missed the boat, aming at the devices and not the idiots who use them. My truck is full of items legal under thier mobile scanner-receiver law and once, tried to prosecute a HAM for having his equipment in a mobile set-up (NY lost that one by the way).

No radar detectors, scanners and maybe (in Canada) no CB radios eithor. And now GPS units. Common sense is dead.

I think you may have read his post wrong... NY is looking into mandating that trucks HAVE a gps unit... due to the fact that so many truckers still seem to be hitting bridges. Although it still takes commons sense. If you are going down a street and see a bridge that is either clearly marked or looks to low, your best option is stop and not try and go under it. Even if it means getting a ticket from the police, it sure beats the cost of the damage for going under the bridge and then explaining to your safety director what happened

I think the easiest way would be to actually mark the bridges in regards to actual height. Forget the snow, floods, etc... NYC city showing two different types of signs for bridges or overpasses is very confusing. In snows in other states, but they do not have a 2 sign posting. The cars could care less... give the height is simple terms - Actual height.. with maybe a warning sign under stating "height may be less in winter months due to snow buildup".

I agree NY is confussing. I make deliveries into Brooklyn and on Long Island. I have driven under bridges marked 12'2'' with a 13'6" trailer. If they ever get so much snow that there is a foot or more packed on the road surface then the roads would be shut down!

I guess I did. I have a very healthy animosity towards NY-or any community that seeks to dictate anything to anyone short right to life, property etc. If New York "mandates" a GPS? Are they going to pay for the equipment and retro-fitting of the trucks? Is not having a GPS going to count as points on the driver's CFA2010 record?

The consumer market should decide, not the state.

And, it isn't a GPS issue. It's a driver issue-as you so rightly point out. Does New York or any other state really belive that a GPS is going to have that big of an impact on truck safety. We have the MCRA. And apprently all that great data in there is being ignored-what makes a GPS better? What evidence can they point to? What non-sense!
