I can throw a rock and hit I-75, straight and level. I hear trucks with their jakes on all the time. Dunno why they would use them there.
-
Never use Jake Brakes going downhill or around curves that are snow or ice covered. If you do, you truck may suddenly slide dramatically and you could quickly find yourself in a ditch or over a mountain.

Wow I've learned so much about using jakebrakes reading what you guys posted! Never use them in snow, rain, or ice cause they might cause you to slide. Never use them while on a flat surface, all they do is make noise. so I'm guessing they don't really do what they are supposed to, you'd just be showing off making all that noise...
Ok I'm sorry but some of you guys' responses are to funny!W903B Thanks this. -
guess i am just stupid but i use them to slow down on flat surfaces--why use up my tractor brakes---and to be a real rebel i use the spike as well

WRONG!!!
It has no effect at all on fuel economy. -
The thing about jakes burning fuel and having an effect on your fuel economy has been discussed a lot and jakes do not waste fuel. The fuel is shut off to the engine when the jakes are on. Also I will use the jake in town, my truck is quiet and doesn't make much noise. It's nice to use the jake and slow the truck a little to time the stop lights so you don't have to come to a complete stop. Also jakes will save a lot of wear and tear on the service brakes. Now in our dump truck I usually leave to jake off because it has a straight pipe on it. Only time I turn that one on is if i'm fully loaded on the highway or coming down a big grade. But like many have said don't become reliant on them you need to know how to control a rig on a hill in case the jakes fail and trust me they do fail sometimes, electronics have lots of sensors and what not that can burn out and fail.
