Point taken...and I realize you're just teasing...but look at what motivates the tobacco industry and what motivates the government on this particular issue.

Most of the time I'm referring to drug addicts (people who have to smoke every day).

I have been struggling with quitting over eight years now. As a rule, I don't smoke. However, if I am somewhere that serves alcohol and I have more than two drinks, I will be smoking. Since the only place you can smoke indoors in my state is in the Indian casinos, when I go there I just resign myself to buying a pack of smokes and smoke like a chimney while I am there.
Needless to say, I don't go to the Indian casinos very often, once a year or so. I figure the health detriments from the cigarrettes I smoke are outweighed from the stress of craving I feel for not having a smoke when there. I am going to stink like an ashtray when I go home anyway.
    It does stink horribly.
I work around people with COPD and other severe lung problems everyday. I deliver oxygen. It never ceases to amaze me that someone on oxygen would continue to smoke. But if you do, at least take the cannula out of your nose first. Flash burnt lungs has to be one of the worst ways to die.

Only an idiot would say smoking is healthy. The other issue is about smokers' rights. In MI you can nolonger smoke in a bar, and although that makes me happy on a personal level, the libertarian in me actually has me siding with the smokers. The bigger picture is that we are becoming a society that seems to have no problem taking away the rights of people who do things we disagree with. I have no desire to tell other people how to live their lives, whether it be smoking or religion. When you disrespect the individual to the point that the government micromanages each citizen's life, you are a society that is nolonger free.

I used to smoke 2 packs a day, and some days I'd even be on the start of my third...but once I turned 25 I decided to quit cold turkey 'cause the smokes were costing me so much $, and I was starting to get a hacking cough and really short of breath all the time. At first it was tough- I went from 127 lbs to over 150 in just 3 months (I'm now back to being 125, and I couldn't be happier), and I was getting really bad cravings, especially when I was driving. That last little while, things have been going good- I only get a small craving once in a while, and I can usually distract myself long enough for it to pass.

The funny thing is, since I've quit, going into truck stops where the guys and gals are smoking kind of gets to me. I don't mind the fact that they're smoking- it's their choice, and it doesn't tempt me to get back into the habit- I just notice now how thick the air feels.

Being a chain smoker when I was younger, a non-smoker, an occasional smoker and than resuming up the habit when life got too stressy - I've got a couple of thoughts on it. I don't smoke now.

Once you smoke, you'll always want to. Period. Fire those receptors up and they don't ever go away. Yes, smoking promotes brain cell activity. Nicotine promotes mental acuity and all kinds of good stuff like that. It also constricts blood vessels and does lots of damage. I'm almost 50, and I'll still be sporting a stiffy when most of you around my age are chewing Viagra like it's coming out of a Pez dispenser.

Even if I still smoked, I would have to say that putting up a poll like this, and glorifying a habit that obviously does way more damage to your body than what your chosen ignorance wants to lead you to believe... makes me real glad my youngest kid doesn't read here.

He's watching his grandfather die from the habit. My ex-wife's Dad chain smoked for all of his life.... and he's not doing too well right now.

You want to smoke, smoke. Puff your brains out, have a great time!!! It's still America, and I have no problem waiting for a table outside while you enjoy a smoke. It even smells good to me from a distance. But I don't like smoky bars anymore, and I can't stand the smell of it on my clothes when I get home. They go straight in the washer. Hate to break it to you, it stinks. You stink. Stick your nose in the ashtray of your truck and that's what you smell like to a non-smoker when you strut inside after a cigarette break.

And don't give me the standard reformed smoker crap, I don't want to hear it. I only hopped in here because someone wanted to shout out how healthy it is, that's just plain freakin' stupid.

It is the MAJOR cause of death in the country, and the easiest to prevent. That statement came from the American Cancer Society in 1982, and it still holds true today.

    Shame on you. :biggrin_25510:

I smoked cigarettes from 73-95 then stopped.
    I still enjoy a good cigar 2 or 3 times a year.
Could easily become a habit but then I don't think I would enjoy it as much.
