I 100% agree with everything you wrote here. I'm just saying it's a huge culture shock for new drivers coming into the industry as to why so many quit. It's real tough for a middle aged person coming from say a desk job, home every night a shower and hot meal every night, perhaps a shower or two at the health club after a workout during the week, barbeques on Saturday, NFL on Sunday to up and come into a job that is 24/7 shower when/if you can, being away from loved ones for weeks at a time, eating the same old crap day in and day out at the truck stop. The starter company these new drivers invariably end up at harping on their idle times expecting them to suffer in the summer heat, threatening termination for speeding, log violations, DOT birddogging the driver's every move looking to get that driver off the road, the stress level spikes up but the driver better not have high blood pressure or high blood sugars or too large of a neck for god's sake, shippers/receivers treating the drivers like crap because they are forced to park overnight on their lot and pee where they have to, not showered up and shaved because the driver is just trying to max out his paid 70 driving.

um...wow...you totally wiffed seeing what i said about a mentor only getting a MAX of $125 a month in that 'extra penny a mile' for each student. the mentor dont see that as soon as the student goes solo. the student must remain a driver at swift for 6 months before the mentor sees that penny. So if the mentor cranks out as many students as he can, and if they all remain driving at swift (as company drivers...by the way)....the MAX a mentor will get is $125 a month. A MENTOR WILL NOT GET ANYTHING CLOSE TO $800/MO FOR BONUS-PENNY-A-MILE-PAY.....

A mentor will see more income for getting paid the student miles than he will in bonus pay....but that should be obvious.

Are you saying that if you were to successfully turn out 10 good drivers in a year's time, and they all stayed on the required amount of time that you would be eligible for $0.01 for every one of their miles, it would max out at $125 month per student? That's $1250 bub.

but thats not what you implied by your post about mentor's driving to shippers to camp out when they could have stopped at a truck stop. Least thats not how i read that post. If i'm mentoring a student, and want to keep the truck rolling, or need to make up time, etc., and i tell the student "we need to head straight to the Kohl's store, and we'll park in the back by the docks." And the student pulls into a truck stop or rest area and says "i'm done for the night"......yeah....that will be your last load on this truck, son.

as far as 'peeing wherever you need to pee'....thats why you get a HAZMAT endorsement and carry a pee-bottle from Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop. DOT can't nail you for that....then you PROPERLY dispose of it. my first mentor did that to me once... i made a wrong turn, pulled into a car wash lot to flip a U, and he came out of the sleeper asking "what are you doing?" then asked me to stop, and stood on the first step on the passenger side, and took a wizz right there. I so wanted to kick him in the back, or put the truck in gear and make it jump, so he fell into his own puddle of pee. what a loser....

This is what I'm saying, new drivers are appalled at the lifestyle, witnessing peeing on the side of the road, between trailers, on the fuel aisle, in the truck etc is just one example turning people away from trucking. We gotta do what we gotta do which in turn feeds the hatred of truckers by the shippers/receivers. There are so many forces arrayed against us. The anti-idling nazis, the one little light bulb burned out and DOT says you're OOS, CSA points kill your career I could go on and on.

Well, aren't you just a little ray of sunshine! Thank God the companies don't have you working in recruiting. They would never get any drivers. Haha.
Did the earth stop spinning? I actually agree with this post.

And the mentor would be lucky to see any max amount from any student because the averages are not with the student planning long term engagements with the company. All the students my husband had, the only one one that made even a blip on his settlement sheet was one, and he was an exception to the rule. This kind of student you don't find very often, one who came close to "maxing out". This is the reality of any addition to your income from a student, your ROI is bleak, even if all you're figuring is longevity with the company. Dick Jones would be wise not even adding this into his equation.

If a driver wants to become a trainer because it would look good on his bottom line, he best stay away from training. They already have their quota of trainers who are looking to pad their logbook and it shows rather quickly on down the road when the rookie goes solo.

If it's not the trainer's desire to see drivers trained adequately to be safe and efficient out there on the road (and I know there's a few trainers who do have the desire).......please do everyone here a favor and don't train. They make the good trainers look bad and it is a negative reflection on the company they work for.

I'm not directing this at you, but to anyone who only sees training as another way of making $$.
