You will not learn to drive at a trucking school, you will just learn how to get your CDL. You will learn to drive when you are out with your trainer (and for the next 20+ years or so) OK, you will get the basics, but it will not feel "crammed in" after a few days. My school was only three weeks long and I was so frustrated in the first week that I was not getting enough driving and backing time. By the beginning of the third week I was very frustrated that I could not just take the test and be done, I was ready. Don't over think the CDL school. Like most things we worry about in life, the actuality is not nearly as bad as the fear.

marlowhy It sounds like you have thought alot about your life style change. I have been really looking into it too. My husband(painndaneck) wants me to forget my little retail job and join him on the road and if I enjoy it enough and want to get my cdl later he is all for it. I hate to say it, one moment I am all ready, the next I am sick to my tummy with fear. Is that the same for you (anyone else too?) I maybe just thinking to much into it like my husband says, but I do agree, I need a change. I need something different. I have always wanted to travel and see the US. What better way right? I haven't said anything to anyone but my parents about our plans and being great like they are, they are all for it and are a little envious they cant do the same!

My husband asked me that before christmas if I wanted one of those 'electronic book things' and I told him no. I told him I want to be able to read my books without haveing to depend on batteries, except maybe a flashlight. Call me old fashion but there is nothing better than the smell of a book and a stroll thur a bookstore or libary to find it. But after reading some other posts, it might be in my future....

Oh man - you are NOT alone in feeling that way!! Especially when I was first considering this. Klingon and I are 'giving up' a HUGE part of our lifestyle/history/possessions to do this. The questions of 'will we make it', 'are we making the right decision' - those went round and round in my head. I have a feeling they did for Klingon as well, but he hid that well. That is where our faith has jumped in. At least for me. The timing of all of this just fits like a lost puzzle piece. For us this decision is as big as getting married in the first place was; or our decision to have surgery. It is changing our lives. Marriage was the best decision I have made, and I think this will be one as well. Do I expect it to be easy - hell no - it is work. Do I expect it to be worth it - hell yes! We are following a dream/plan that we have thought/talked about for YEARS!! The bonus - we are doing it TOGETHER :D

As for 'seeing the US' - we want that too, but we know that for the most part we will be seeing it from the Interstate... however... on those 'home' times - our home will be what ever area of the US we are in. Find a safe place to park the rig, rent a car and explore!! THOSE are the days when we will see the US. I want to see the National Parks and Monuments. I want to see the Statue of Liberty, Smithsonion - and a whole bunch more - even the Biggest Ball of Twine - LOL!

Anyway - just remember - you are NOT alone in how you feel. For some this is such a right decision - for others it might not be. Only YOU know what is right for you...

  7. Butterflies in the tummy? I have a whole bee hive!!
Today I am handing over keys to someone else-everything has been given away or in storage.
2 bags packed-there is no backing out now,
I think having fallen into this, there is a reason why there are so many of us doing this, timing, economy etc... (what the reason is IDK!!)

    Lady K Thanks this.

It took me awhile to convince my wife but she never regretted it. You can make a hell of a lot of money driving as husband/wife team! Plus you have no reason to go home so make even more money. Companies treat husband/wife teams like gold too! It will be a little tough until you get used to it but after that it's a breeze. The memories and good times you will have are far more valuable then all the money you will make out there.

    Give it a shot!

Maybe your wife and my wife should get together.... She has over a thousand paper back books... she loves to just set and read.
At least you would save $$ and not have to "buy" the store/farm.... lol
