Sad thing is this kind of stuff happens everyday.Sometimes it is driver error and not being prepared but a lot of the problem is these truck driving schools just absolutely do nothing to prepare you for what you are going to face when you get finished with them. Almost all of these schools are done with you after they see you can shift gears and not run over anyone. As much as it costs to go to these places these days you would think they could devote a day or 2 class time to preparing new guys for the application process and what life on the road is likely to be like. You dont learn anything about the companies at these schools past what the recruiters come in and spout off to you. A huge amount of things like this could be avoided if there was any effort at all to make sure the drivers are at least aware of the other aspects of getting the jobs and how the jobs will be.A lot of drivers go into this stuff just having zero idea of the huge paper chain that goes along with all of the other crap and some of it can be quite the surprise.

 

I agree with everything said. I drove for Star Transportation for 9 months then J B Hunt and actually got a one year safe driver pin from them, But it seems that all the large company's treat drivers in general as a number. When i went through J B Hunts orientation, there were about 120 drivers for 3 day orientation and a second group later in the week. With that kind of turnover, you know they aren't treating people right.

Also I would like to note that a lot of new drivers get pushed into this idea of being an owner operator. Thats all nice if you've got the money for the truck up front, but financing a truck through these company's can be another nightmare altogether.
Not only will they make sure they get the truck payment out of your check reguardless of what money you take home (If any). They also run you hard to keep your miles up so you make the payments then when your truck is paid off, don't bother asking where the Miles are.

Finally, Im glad I found this site. Great information for drivers!!!

 

My school teaches how to get the CDL...only. And that's how I like it. All of this other crap and stupidity can be learned elsewhere, like right here. If new drivers are too stupid or lazy to do their homework, they'll just have to suffer for it.

 

And that my friends is a very typical example of the attitude of the drivers out on the road and comming out of these schools these days.

 

never heard any thing good about covenant but ive seen thousands on the road who made it thru the swift training and got some otr experience and start a career.
