No need to have an external SD Card for additional memory. The TND will not call to it.

My original rand kept freezing up, then it quit charging , after talking to someone they siad to send it in and I would be sent a new one. I got a refurbished one ---STRIKE 1 . It also kept freezing up and giving me a "critical error" --STRIKE 2--so I was told to send that one back to ---so I asked why -If i bought a new unit , do they send me someone elses used broken/repaired unit-- no answer......So anyway I sent unit 2 back and thought they were going to actually replace my unit with a new unit and taa daa another broken, repaired unit that has an older serial number from my original and has been in someone truck for the last two years... STRIKE 3.... When I took it out of the box it had a full charge so I started inputting all of my addresses back in---(the backup/restore on the rand application didnt restore all my addresses to the replaced units) so anyway the battery dies after 10 minutes, so i recharged it over night and this time the battery lasted about 20 minutes---STRIKE 4 ---- obviously the battery is trashed cuz its so old.... So forget about taking it into the truck stop and loading next stops or trips or figuring HOS , or inputting a bunch of new terminal address while yer relaxing etc etc unless I bring a power cord in !!! STRIKE 5---
Anyway now other stuff I had several issues with routing problems, including one where the rand says you cant run up the 93 from the
I-40 in Kingman ,AZ. into Las Vegas BUT 100's of trucks do everyday. (yes I did the updates). This use to be closed due to the Hoover Dam bypass bridge being built but opened several months ago. I emailed rand about the new opening 4 times - never once was I answered, I called into tech support but was told it takes several months to make a correction to the software???? if so , how can they be so quick on contruction zone issues...
Anyway buyer BEWARE...... ONLY company I know of where you can buy BRAND NEW UNIT that breaks and they send you other broken units to replace it... I bought a new UNIT not a used unit...
You might be better off sticking to a Garmin or other brand that has been out longer...
I will see how the new/used/older refurbished unit works and update later..
If you buy a Rand and it acts up YOU WILL get someone else broken/repaired unit in exchange and yes it will probably be older....what a racket............................glider7 Thanks this. -
Construction is a seperate database. Highways are on the mapping database. Any new construction can take up to a year to get on the main mapping database - Navteq. When NavTeq updates, then we see the update.
E-Mail me all your info on anything that you have done so far with Customer support.
thanks,

Well I guess I didnt know I was suppose to email you about all this. Since it all started I kept thinkin that the guy I was talking to at Rand was actually going to do the "right thing".
I dont want to name names on the forum cuz he was a nice guy and I am sure he was just doing whatever company "policy" was.
But anyway I can forward you my emails to and from him.
As far as the routing goes. I dont know what to say. The 93 was opened back up I think in December 2010. I used the "tell Rand" link to let them know about it a couple times and email a couple times (and I also told him when I was talking to on the phone- he just said it was a different department " no replies to my emails and no corrections.
the rand just keeps saying to u-turn the whole 100 miles- the route the Rand says which is to take the 68 down into laughlin,nv. , then the 163 to the 95. Which is way longer and has a slow 12 mile grade at 6% into Bullhead city ,az and then you have to climb back out of the valley to go out to the 95. But anyway thats about all I got.
I kept my word -- I told the two different guys I talked to in tech support that if they sent me another used unit I would post to the truckers forum to "be the nice guy" and let others know of the situation. -
I sent you 6 or 7 of the emails you requested. There are more but those were just mainly checking on status type of emails. The original emails about the route corrections I dont have anymore..
As of now I am not sure what you can do for me . I got my 2nd used replacement and I am on hometime now so I will test it out and update later.
A husband /wife team friends of mine called me last week who also bought the Rand and said they were having weird issues with thiers and they were told to send it back and they would get new replacement.----Needless to say I told them what I was going thru and I think they arent even gonna bother - and just buy a garmin or keep using thier Iphone mapping. However the reason she called was to verify that the rand was right because it was telling them they couldnt use the 93 into Las Vegas, I told her about that issue to . so anyway i saved them alot of time and miles - by letting them know the Rand was wrong. I am sure (well maybe not) that -who knows how many drivers have actually gone the way of the Rand and wasted all that time. BUT..... I did my part by trying to get it fixed months ago.
take care -
You have to remember, changing the mapping is not as simple as baking a pie. NavTeq has to verify first and then they update the main core maps. When we buy our updates from them is when we will see the corrections. All navigations units go through this process of waiting till the main core maps are corrected then new updated maps are bought.
Give me a from\to and I will see if the new maps have been corrected.
thanks,

Mark, I can understand about the time it takes to update things. It is just the way it is. But how about them sending out an older "refurbished" unit to replace a newer defective one? This just doesn't sound right, or like good business to me. Is it what really happens, or is there more to the story?
-
As far as the map updates, I bought mine in December 09 and I don't remember any map update coming out yet. Pretty sure Garmin came out with one several months ago. Actually they came out with several if you count the city maps, which are somehow separate from the main blob of mapness. So the maps can be separated.
So if Garmin gets their map data from Navtech, and Garmin released a map update, Navtech must have released an update, right? So where is it for the TND? -
Yea, this is a good question. Maybe there is more to the story..I would expect that a returned defective unit that was very recently purchased should be swapped out with a similar new unit.....If that isn't the case, I think knowing the reasoning behind this might be of benefit..
I for one wouldn't want someone elses' troubled unit after spending a fair amount of money on a brand new one,
and I really can't see Rand doing that with a customer..They do seem to care about their customers.
Map updates will always take time...that doesn't happen over night....Last edited: Mar 9, 2011

Mark in reply to to your post about sending you the from and to locations I listed it in the previous post and alos sent you the emails that list it.
as far as the updates go , I dont see how they can do the "construction" updates and detours so quick but yet not change a route that is in the system from a closed road to an open road.
and ya the whole thing about sending me and others, used units only tells me that they have had ALOT of problem units and the only way to get rid of the problem units is to send them out to guys like me and others to replace "their" defective new units.
Really isnt right. They should just sell all the defective/fixed units at a discount to people that want a Rand but dont have the $500.00 (with tax and shipping) to spend on a new one. And the people that bought new should get new in return.
By the way I got mine from Don # Diesel Boss If anyone is going to buy one I would go to them, he was very helpful and shipping was quick.Dieselboss Thanks this.
