Packing List for Students

OK.... I have several folks telling me that Im taking too much but no one is offering suggestions on where to cut back. I am thinking that the laptop bag would be the only place to cut back as I would think the rest are essentials but maybe Im wrong. Help me here...--

 

Dude, I don't think you CAN cut back. That list looks very reasonable to me, and along the lines of what I'd bring, and based on comments on other threads, this list matches pretty close (except the bunk fan). I don't see where someone can tell you anything to leave off. Most of that will fit inside a duffle bag.

A good question to ask, though is - Can anyone provide dimensions for a duffle bag that we should bring? If the answer is 2x2x2, then we have to pack based on that size. Now if we are told 3x2x2, then that's another scenario of packing.

One last thought..... You mentioned 2 packs of socks. I buy them in 8 packs. I think 16 pairs is a bit overkill. Maybe 10 pair would suffice. Not that 6 pair of socks would seem to put one over the "limit".

I'm not reading the whole thread, but space is limited. Most trainers will give you the top bunk and maybe 2'x2'x2' cabinet space. Many things you use the trainers stuff like maps, flashlight, etc. Most orientations will give you a pen and ruler. You can use the trainers map as a clipboard for your logbook. Scrap the luxuries like a fan and everything in the laptop bag.

Basically you want a weeks clothes, toiletries, laundry bag. I would sleep on a sleeping bag with a blanket and pillow. Reason being why the truck is moving you have to sleep on the bottom bunk, which is the trainers. It's much easier to throw a sleeping bag on top of his bed.

You are going to be working and learning alot. What little free time you have you will want to sleep. Truck stops have TV rooms/game rooms to get you by. But trust me, you won't have much free time.

Make sure you bring one towel or two. Truck stops supply them but a terminal shower doesn't. Don't be surprised if you don't get a shower for 2-3 days. Some drivers are like that. The bad ones go a week, lol.

You can buy single serve laundry supplies at truck stops.

Keep it to a minimum. You will have room for about 2 bags you can store by your feet on the top bunk. It's about 7' wide so there's a little extra room by your feet. I don't see why a laptop would be a problem, but you might need a 12V adapter if the trainer doesn't have an inverter.You might charge in a truckstop. You could store it on the top bunk too. The majority of the time you'll be sleeping while moving on the bottom bunk.

You probably don't need the bedding stuff, a sleeping bag would take up much less room.

 

What about my accordion? Can I bring my accordian, instead of a laptop?

 

being a computer nerd one thing I would suggest for those of you like me who just have to stay connected is a netbook instead of a full notebook. A netbook is very small, perfect for going online, video chatting with family, or whatever you want to do. Battery life can run up to 10 hours on a single charge. Did I mention they are small? Only thing is they don't have an optical drive so no dvds but they work with netflix. If you have an android smartphone there is a $10 app that lets you connect your phone to your netbook and use the internet anywhere you get cell service. Did I mention they were small? You can pick up a cheap netbook for under $200 online. A nice one will max out around $350.
