Automatics are coming. The technology will be perfected and they will take over. The biggest reason I say that is the cost of fuel. When the technology is perfected, there will be no way a stick will outperform an auto at the pump. No way.
I know this will pi$$ off a lot of "old timers" but I'm sorry, there it is. Technology will dictate what the future holds, and technology is already being driven by the high cost of fuel.
The same holds true for "extra-wides" or what most call "super singles".
I get the impression that lots posts concerning those two things are of the kneejerk variety, with "old timers" simply resisting the advance of technology and unwilling to admit to it.Jrtec13 and Force Fed Flesh Thank this. -
Tyson and I've heard that Interstate is going to them.

I'd rather learn to drive a manual anyways. Automatics may be upcoming, but for now they aren't and most company's require you to know how to drive a manual.

Also, older automatics had 3 speeds. My Chevy Tahoe has 5, and lots of newer ones have 6,7, even 8 speeds. This means the trans can shift at a lower RPM than those of old.
It's coming.
And before anyone jumps, I like shifting just as much as anyone. I'm a great stick-man. I can float upshifts and downshifts empty or loaded. -
You'll have to learn in school anyways. Unless there is a special reason for it they wont get an auto plus if you test in an auto then your license will be be restricted to one.
