How old is too old to think about becoming a Company Driver?

There are a lot of smaller companies that might be willing to accept you simply because of your work record. Also maybe by you receiving the additional income you could consider getting your own truck and authority, you definitely should'nt be an insurance risk unless they try to discriminate because of age. Hopefully this helps and try your best to get in, we'll be pulling for ya!

 

You could make enquiries with Schneider they reputedly have a policy like Home Depot of employing mature people , never say never and ignore the negative comments as nothing in this life is written in stone ,as you said don't live to regret not having a try at something. Good luck to you.

 

the bottom line is it doesn't hurt to apply. Let them decide if you're too old or not when they get the app. Don't let some guy on an internet forum stop you from applying. I even know some places that prefer retired guys at least for seasonal work. When they hire young guys they don't show up on time, or quit after their first paycheck, etc... I know a guy who hauls livestock who is over 70, over 6'5" tall too and strong as a bull. He get's more trucking done in a week than some of em do in a month !

i find your posting to be an ironic one at that..

on the one hand, you tell him age don't matter and to go for it.

then you tell him an old 71 year old driver killed some people...

are you sending him the RIGHT message...???

 

yeah, that's the thing...reflexes....but as truck drivers we do have a clear ADVANTAGE over say they typical 4 wheeler, and that is the ride/seating height of the truck driver. sitting higher that any other driver (4 wheeler, mototbike, for instance) we can see further down the road, and take evasive actions well ahead of the others.

but then too, general health, eye sight, hearing, and well just the age in of itself...

we really did have elder students...one was in fact ex-military (air force) and he was 68 yrs old.....now mind you, he was absolutely no dummy, he was quite intelligent, but he simply could not grasp the double clutching, and had a difficult time with the yard skills. his "timing" to enter and complete ALL of the yard skills just wasn't there like (say) a 30 or 40 year old, or even a 50 year old....

as a result..?? he was in school for about 9 months....and the actual length of all our classes...?? 8 to 10 weeks....we DO NOT graduate students just to get in new ones..and we cannot charge them more than the set prices...

as of last month (just days ago), he was still not working....(but collecting SS, and his air force pension) and also mind you, he graduated back in June of LAST YEAR....!!!

think he will have to go back to school...??? of course......but given his hard times learning, and now he's a year older......he just ain't gonna get a job......

too bad too, i had some great times talking with him about the military and listening to all his stories, a real "encyclopedia" of knowledge for all things air force/military..
