Once you have that cdl, you'll need to work at keeping it.
I agree about the big companies, but use ALOT of caution in eustis.

, guess it wasn't meant to be.

Last couple of days have been spent driving the highways and backroads of central Florida. We always pull over for lunch at some lone, mom and pop diner that's alongside a back country road. Its neat to see the central part of the state this way. I normally don't get to travel in these parts, Lots of agriculture, mining, cattle ranches. driving without instructor today was really cool
takes alot of pressure off, the missed shifts didn't seem as bad as when someone is watching. We were in the Mack 9 speed daycab pulling a 53ft trailer.
We had alot of time off last week so I spent my time filling out apps. After the set back with my first app, Swift has approved me for orientation on 5th July :smt023. If they're willing to give me a chance then thats fine with me. Just need the opportunity and I can take care of the rest, I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed.
Orientation is in Ocala, so I'll just get a room for a few days and if all goes as planned I'll get a trainer and just run my truck down home and have the wife bring me back to begin my new career, at least that's how I would like it to work out , we'll see.
Have to get up early for a 4am drive to Georgia tomorrow will post more tomorrw, peace!123456 and The Challenger Thank this. -
That's some pretty good experience, it's good to see school's actually give their students real world experience. There's a school up here in Chipley near where I live, I bet they let their guys run a couple hundred miles a day, that's the best kind of experience you can get before entering the real world of driving. I'm a firm believer if you go in to an opportunity with a level head then success is totally up to you, with that said you'll probably do fine at Swift. I met Oldnewbiegonnabe when he was driving for Swift and he was one of the most positive new drivers I've ever met, we had lunch in Valdosta and spoke like we were old friends, he told me the miles were at Swift so long as you just ran them, delivered on time, and didn't put up too much of a fuss, don't be a push over, but understand there's going to be BS that goes along with this job, it gets escalated due to the long hours and time on your own, but at the end of the day if you can just let it roll off of your back it will make your day that much easier. I speak from experience, I spent the first 5 of my 8 years of driving being pissed off all the time, these past 3 years I've taken a different approach and dealt with things in a calmer manner, I feel by doing this I've actually garnered a fair amount of respect from my employer and my fellow employees.

We took off early this morning to get some night driving under our belts. My partner got the lead seat and drove through the backroads from Orlando to I75. Stopped to get breakfast at a small truckstop at the Sumterville exit. Loved the ambiance
, decor was vintage greasy spoon, just what I would expect at 5:30 in the morning. Waitress was really nice and we all had a good breakfast. Headed up to the Georgia line to the Flying J for a swap out. Spent my whole break on the phone with
Stevens. I'm lining up my pre-hires and so far Swift and Stevens.
Finally got in the drivers seat and headed back south. We took my favorite truck, KW T800 with Cummins 10spd with the skateboardlove that truck! Drove down 75 and got to pull in my first weight station and a bit down the road tha AG station. Uneventful I know, but its all new to me so cut me some slack
.
We took the backroads back down to I4 and brought her back to the barn and logged a decent 245 miles
Overall the day went smooth and the instructor thinks Ive got a good handle on things. Still a few missed shifts here and there but I know what I need to work on (everything) and I'm confident at this point I could pass any road test my future employer can throw at me.
Since we went in early Wednesday we're off today so I will enjoy my time off while I still can. Till Monday be safe and peace.123456 Thanks this. -
Cool, sounds good.
Thanks for the update.!!vmaggs Thanks this. -
Hey there I was just wondering why you chose Mid Florida Tech over the driving school in PTEC? Pinellas Technical Education Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. I was considering both schools but since I live in Ft Myers I decided to go to PTEC since I can drive back and forth and be home every day, save spending money on hotels. They are also around $2,200.

When I filled out the MVR questionaire some how I checked off the wrong box. The way the questions were asked I thought they were only asking for 10yrs back for DUI's. Got a letter back saying I tried lying about my MVR.
Stupid ######!&, like I didn't know my 20yr old DUI was on my MVR? Of course I did, I have nothing to hide just ticked off the wrong box. Oh well, there loss, I am a great student and pretty good rookie driver and I am glad I didn't get stuck with that female instuctor, she's the one who wrote the letter informing me that I was a liar
. Allen seemed pretty cool, he even told me to fill out app carefully, s@#t happens, next!!!!!!!
As far as being home every night, I stay at the Homestead Suites, 5 min away for $150/3 nights, just makes life a whole less stressful. After a 10hr school day, driving 2hrs, hitting the sack, getting on the road by 4:30 to do it all over again to me does't make economical sense, at least with my Tundra V8 it doesn't. If you can hack it, more power to you but my Modays are always a long day and just would'nt want to do it every day.
I know this was a little long winded but you asked. I think things happen for a reason and I am happy to have the fortune of being taught by two great instructors with over 60yrs of knowlege behind them. Good luck and let us know how the training is going.warrior81 Thanks this. -
That wasn't long winded at all, thanks for the info
Yeah when I filled out that mvr they told me "if you don't know then say yes or else you can be disqualified for lying!" Well that scared the heck out of me. I got a ticket once for following too closely so on a few of the questions I put yes because I didn't know if that could be construed as reckless driving.
The 2 male instructors I met there seem really nice and laid back and one of them was even telling me stories of his owner/operator days. I saw the female briefly, and talked with her briefly on the phone, so I don't know what she is like yet. I hope she's not one of those "I have something to prove" types.
They both sound like good schools, my first choice would have been Mid Florida Tech but like I said I wanted to be closer to home. I have a small car so gas will probably cost me $15-$20 a day to drive back and forth. Or I might find a cheap hotel close by just for those 3 nights like you did, I'm not sure yet. Guess I'll find out how I feel after I have to get up super early for a few days LOL. Class starts August 22nd.vmaggs Thanks this.
