Hah! What parts are plastic? Bumpers, steps, door extenders, Fenders???
But cabin core is made of steel and tell me why EU truck with short wheel base, 4x2 is of the same weight, like US one? Becouse there is a myth about plastic cabines. Really European cabine is heavier a US one. No plastic roof, no plastic sleeper, no aluminium panels, all of steel. The problem is that EU trucks are all of COE design, and no destoible areas to save cabin in front collisions, so European cabines are tought, heavy and made of steel panels and steel substructure.
And lets compare Century class with european conv truck, with scania t-series... Freightliner hood is made of plastic, Scania hood is made of steel ####! heavy, sleepe and cabine are made with aluminium, EU cabine is 100% steel!
so this is MYTH!
Why do so many Americans hate European trucks?

.....we ate talking about rims
i cant see reason for not chose steel cab as rust
cab can run 20years without rust problems
but one thing is unclear to me
since US truckers are prefers lightweight construction why you still use 6x4
here we dont use 6x4 for more than 60-100mille distances
anything longer they are not economicLast edited: Jun 20, 2011

Ouh, some old cabines, even steel were dangerouse. Early Kamaz cabs made of steel now are very dangerouse becouse of rust. Last year I saw international 9800 crash result... It was unbelivable, but driver jumped out cabine and got "minor" injury... Cabin was ruined. I did rewiring after cab swap. it was scary....
Well, old COE test...

And trucker's death...

Yeah, I understand, driver was tired, did not sleep night before accident, it was hi speed crash, but new design cabin could save his life, and conventional design could save his life.
Yeah, I see rear ended container chassis is of very old design w/o safety bar, but....
And COE vs Conventional truck

ZIL vs MAN, COE driver injured, but survived, and compare cabin damage! That's why I do not like COE..... -
here is one of reasons why we use 4x2+3axle semitrailers
from
http://www.baumaschinenbilder.de/
look at wheelbase of trailer from king pin
and this trailer is 5ft shorter than normal size just imagine what kind of wheelbase it would be
this will require active steering system on last axle on trailer and this is lot more expensive than 4x2+3axle
also heavier -
