i see, thanks for the info.... what type of engine do you recommend on a high milage used truck? im looking at older trucks with high milage in the $10-$15k range....
-
please note what kind of truck it will be and what type of job you will do
on construction trucks we change oil ( full synthetic) every 30000milles
if work is heavy we do it every 10days (~1500-2000milles)
i know some guys driving international long haulage who change oil every 150000km/160000km this is 93-100 000milles -
just another tip if your going to buy a truck DO YOU OWN OIL CHANGES! dont waste your money haveing someone else do what you can do in less then 15 min....
Step one, put a bucket BIG bucket 12+gal bucket under oil drain plug.
Step two, slowly remove the drain plug
Step Three, wipe plug and hole and put the plug back in, make sure its tight
Step four, move bucket underneith your oil filters
Step five, remove the oil filters (NOTE the will be full of oil so be carefull or you will be wareing it
Step six, Rub oil on the gasket of the new filters
Step seven, fill filters 75% full of oil
Step eight, put them back on (BY HAND NEVER USE A FILTER WRENCH TO INSTALL A OIL FILTER)
Step nine, put the oil in until its at the full mark on the dipstick
Step ten, Turn the truck on (IF OIL PRESSURE DOES NOT COME UP WITHIN 15 secounds TURN THE TRUCK OFF!) turn the truck off after 30-45 secounds
Step eleven, Check oil level and add until back at the full mark
Enjoy the money you saved by doing that yourself!
Throw your oil filters out, take the old oil to Autozone and they will take it for FREE (other places do this too!)

I don't know what kind of truck or mechanic you are, but 3 gal , really? It'll take between 9-11 gal depending on the engine. I do my oil changes every 10,000-12,000 miles, cheap insurance. I also don't know who told you not to tighten the filter, it should be tightened 1/2 to 3/4 turn past hand tight. The vibration will loosen it and it will fall off if not tightened.VisionLogistics Thanks this. -
3 gallons? you must be talking about a pickup truck !!! My cat holds 10 gallons ! 1 in the filter and 9 in the crankcase.
