All I can do is speak to my experience but I applied online on a weekend and was called the following Monday. I would give them a few days and then call them if they have not contacted you.

They called me back in 9 or 10 days.

Quite frankly, I would continue sending out applications/resumes until someone bites, calling those you applied to a week after an online application was filed, two weeks after one that was mailed. If they say they will call you back, and don't, they won't, so don't waste your time. Worse comes to worse, and you still haven't found a job by then, you can always reapply after 60 days from the last time you estimate they received the previous application/resume if you want (shows persistence without appearing to be a nuisance).
The economy isn't as good as the media would have us believe (half the people I know are out of work right now), so systematic persistence is the order of the day. Also, try some of the headhunters (personnel and staffing agencies), they can take a shotgun approach on your behalf to find opportunities for you, or at least string together some temp jobs until something permanent comes along.
Once upon a time, not very long ago, an online application for a trucking job resulted in a response within 30 minutes. Those days are gone for good thanks to "guest worker" visa programs now being used by the industry to find someone willing to work harder for less in much worse conditions.
Good luck. -
