So I start at PAM next month and would like to know how this contract deal REALLY works. What actually happens if i absolutely have to break the 12 month contract and cant pay the $6000 back? lets say for medical/ personal/whatever type of reasons. Has anyone had to break one of PAM's contracts?
So, about this contract

6K is a lot of money to learn to drive. If I were you, I would look elsewhere for a training/driving job.

Look for a Local School so you have more options! and Much Cheaper than most Company Schoolings
Local Schools:
+ Most states have a EDD/Employment program that may pay for your truck schooling Completely.
+ More Options (To choose what company you want to go to)
+ Cheaper(Usualy couple K's cheaper)
+ Local
+ don't have to work for a company for X amount of time
+ Some companies will reimburse the cost of schooling
Company School
- You must work for us for a X Amount of time or See a nice big bill in the mail for your schooling cost.
- if you get fired you must pay the schooling cost (Usually around 5+K) or claim Bankrupt.
- If you do get fired, let go; We may ruin your DAC Report
- You are tied to a contract
- Sometimes: Company A will not accept a student who was received training at Company B unless You go through a refresher or start school
just things i've heard and read over the forum -
Back taxes, and back child support.
If you default on a loan, they dont garnish your wages. They send it to a collection agency, and it goes on your credit. -
Having gone through PAMs 1 year contract, it works as such...
Once you get upgraded to first seat (get out of trainers truck), they start taking $45 a week, for I think it was 43 weeks? Somewhere around there. After that last week, they take ALL the money (which will be more than you owe to drivers solutions), and send it off to DS. Then, DS will send you your Driving School certificate along with a check for the extra money past the 1000 whatever you owed.
It's different for everyone because not everyone is in the same financial boat, but I didn't even notice the $45 deduction every week, nor did I notice the $45 increase when they stopped deducting it. I just knew it happened because I looked at my pay summary every week to make sure PAM didnt screw me out of any reimbursements or miles.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
As far as having to break it for medical reasons, I think as long as you come back when you can they will just pick up the time remaining from there, but I am not positive. That's something you need to ask your PAM recruiter when you call in...

Personally I'm not worried about it. I start school at C1 on Monday and will be driving for PAM. I'm fully aware of what I'm getting into. If someone is looking for a way to beat the system before they even begin, there headed down the wrong road imho.Last edited: Sep 21, 2011

I do notice the deductions from my pay. I'm only in my 3rd month, but when you get a check for $225 and there's $100 in deductions/taxes and you get $125 for a week you notice. Granted that was my worst week as for some reason they did not credit several loads to that check. My next check was $1,100 before deductions, about $750 after deductions. I generally average $400-$600/week. I'll definitely notice when they start taking my health insurance out next month. But I guess I gotta make my dues at the 26cpm they offer as a rookie.
EDIT: in addition to the $45/week they take out for c1 they also take out $25/week for the first 5 months as a security in case you decide to quit and trash the truck or something.airforcetoo, Skydivedavec, mattbh23 and 1 other person Thank this.
