How is "communication" inside Stevens?

As some readers know, I will be retiring from the federal government in December 2011. My plan has been to get into OTR since it is something I've wanted to do for a very long time--aviation has been very good to me, but I never "wanted" to do it for as long as I have--and Stevens has always seemed like the "right fit" for me on all kinds of levels.

    All but one, that is.

I need and want effective communication with a company. I believe communication is essential to dealing with issues and it is the only area that my exposure to Stevens has shown a weakness. I have been in touch with three recruiters in the past couple of months. One visited the nearby CDL school and said if I 'ever' needed anything to write. I did--he has never responded. I have had two recruiters at Stevens HQ, only one of the has responded, and then very late and without answering questions.

So the question and purpose of this thread is this: Will communication improve once I am in? I have not heard anything that would indicate drivers do not get what they need, but now that you are thinking about this specifically, let me know.

I am particularly interested in the Alliance drivers since that is the way I want to go.

Had a drawn out and extensive answer to your question, but cyberspace deleted it...so here is the long and short:
Communication is what YOU make of it. There are times when it seems great and others that make you want to bludgeon someone with a meat lock.
It's just the industry. You have to be organized, tenacious and a thick hyde.
Overall, based on my experience in the industry and talking with other drivers with other companies, I would rate the communication at Stevens as about average to a bit better. Perhaps a 6 on a scale of 10.

    DenaliDad and Nycmex77 Thank this.

I had an Alliance trainer who had great success with bribery. He would buy office staff gifts/meals whenever he was on the yard, and he never seemed to have a problem with people there taking/returning his calls. If you are a people person that is good at personal interaction, you will probably do well. I'm more of an introvert and was very happy to keep most of my communication over the Qualcom.

Donuts to the DM (et al), donuts to the mechanics....
that's how I get off the yard so fast.
(and we call them 'incentives', not bribes!)

HAH! Bribery, er, effective use of incentives has worked for me in the past and remains near the top of the "Communication 101" task list!

    Communications?

If it weren't for a lack of communication....we wouldn't have any!

    Why did you ask?

It's the ONLY part of Stevens that concerns me at all. And as I wrote, good communication is critical for me. It's nice to know that the staff is not above bribery...as a federal investigator, I haven't been able to use bribery to my advantage very much in the past!

Man....you should have been on the receiving end of bribery........oh I get it....you can't say anything, and if you did you's have to kill us!:biggrin_25521:
