The difference there is the community college instructors have a set curriculum and bosses critiquing their work. Plus they are usually cheaper and have better financing. Plus it looks better on your application when you list a college, rather than Fred's Truck Driving School. :)

Wow, the misinformation on this thread is astounding.

It's scary to think people come here to actually make career choices that affect the rest of their life.

Please, know what you are talking about before you give people career advice.

I think the big difference in my opinion is wether or not you want to go to work right away with a CDL or not.The "mills"teach you how to pass the test and thats about it.Where the C.C.Might have a little more to teach.

I'm thinking that if you have an opportunity to go strait to a "JOB" that requires a CDL but will hire w/o experience. why not just go to work. A CDL holder with no recent experience is only slightly better than never having seen a CMV at all the way it seems these days. Will they bend and allow you to get it "after hired" ? I'm assuming they have or operate equipment that would require a CDL?? so they should have something for you to operate once you obtain a CDL learners permit. and test in once comfortable. Mind you... I'm assuming that you probably already have driven before "perhaps during your military service" On the other hand if you're not comfortable testing out on your own then I'd say "College"

Actually it's very sound advice. Sounds like you are from Fred's Driving Academy.

Really? Please enlighten me what part of what he said was sound?

That community college instructors have bosses that monitor their work but private schools don't?

Do you understand how stupid that is?

First of all, most states require ALL schools be certified through their education Commision. Private, state schools.....doesn't matter. In Tennessee the THEC certifies all schools, including University of Tennessee. They approve the ciriculum, review the training facility, check the credentials of the instructors and the director of education. They regulate training and closely monitor all training results. All schools are required to report to THEC their graduation and job placement ratios. THEC monitors student complaints and oversees resolutions. THEC regulates advertising, tuition rates, insurance requirements, training material.....EVERYTHING.

If you think good ole Fred just opens shop and starts training people any old way he chooses, you are completely lost.

The truth is that 90% of everything stated in this thread is pure nonsense.

Wanna know why 60% of all drivers abandoned trucking in their first 6 months? Because they come to websites like this and listen to advice from people that are clueless.

Wow! I'm curious, how did you gain so much knowledge and wisdom about the trucking industry with only "0-1 year" experience?

I'd really like to know how one gets so enlightened on a topic in such a short period of time.

I made the decision to go to a community college because I actually went and visited both the "for profit training school" and the community college and had a look at their driving training facilities and equipment and talked with their instructors.

There was no comparison between the two. They seemed to be in completely different leagues.

Couple that with the fact that when a community college trains a driver they put the reputation of their entire institution on the line.

Additionally, unlike a "for profit training school", the community college doesn't take "kick backs", uh, I mean receive referral or placement fees from companies when they help get a driver a job at a company. So, the community college doesn't have a vested interest to try to steer you to a particular company like the for profit training school does.

I could go on and on, but you seem to have all of the answers already and don't need any input from the rest of us.

Kinda makes one wonder why you're even here since the advice here is so wrong and the people here so clueless.
