Wise decision Proudtrucker....you're going to really depend on the Paccar warranty and you're really going to need your spare trucks....

Now guys let that be a lesson to you all....buy a new fleet of trucks with Paccar MX engines and be sure to keep the old trucks around as spares...

Some of our customers are seeing 6 to 8 days a month off the road trying to repair these bundles of junk

Kenworth & Peterbilt a very good trucks. I have ran them both in my time with CAT 3406E engines and thought they were superb.

This thread is about the Paccar MX engine...better known as the king of excrement. Wait until you put one of these into your logging Kenworth...then you will realise what a pile of scrap you have inherited.

Believe me....there will be workshhops all over the world converting kenworths and Peterbilts back to Caterpillar, cummins & Detroits once these things start blowing up all over North America and financially breaking hard pressed operators and families alike

I keep a couple spares for seasonal freight increases and they come in handy if I have a truck damaged in an accident. I didn't make this decision based on the purchase of Paccar engines. I have talked to many fleets and service departments in the states about this engine and I'm not hearing about the same failures that have occured in Ireland. I met with a MX engineer in Chilocothe, OH and addressed these issues and he mentioned design changes since the intial design was offered. If I hear about a rash of failures stateside I will start worrying.

I talked to all the drivers that have received one of these trucks yesterday. Zero oil consumption, very good power and fuel economy and extremely quiet operation. None of them were dissapointed with the package. I understand that time and miles will tell the true story and I will report every issue that occurs in the operation of these units to the members of this site.

I have put over 20000 miles on one, total trash, mine was 430 hp and 1550 torque with a 13 speed tacking 1400 at 70 mph. On flat ground they can get 7 miles per gallon but won't pull a greasy string out of a cats ### otherwise.

I was running 20 in texas, passed this truck who was doing 65mph, left him almost out of site came to this rather steep hill that was half to three quarters of a mile long, he caught me and passed me before I got to the top, what a piece of garbage.

Also on my last trip in this piece of trash, turbo went out at 92 thousand miles, ha ha ha.

Will also add the 587 pete it is in is also garbage, roughest ride I have ever been in, loud, shop manager said the doors weren't put on correctly so tons of air noise coming through both doors, and the sleeper is so loud they might as well of put a hole in it so you could stick your head through it right next to the drives, good luck going to sleep in that piece of trash.

Back to the subject at hand, my company has decided to rebuild all our old cats that have one million plus miles rather than buy any more paccar junk if that tells you anything.

Sounds like they didn't fix the issues the model 387 has had ever since it first came on the scene way back in 2000. Those are the sorriest excuses for doors ever engineered on a truck. You say 92,000 miles? Give it another 10 or 20K miles and one or both of them will be sprung and you won't even be able to get it open. I bet they are already creaking and moaning when you open them? Do the hoods still flop and rattle around very loudly on a 587? Does the interior have about a million creaks and rattles brand new off the dealer lot? So all they did was change the headlights and call it a new truck? I hated 387's. They are roomy and they are Pete's but a 379/389 they are not! Your boss is doing right with the old CAT's now if you can convince him to contact Haney and do them right ;-)

I sincerely hope it works out for you Proudtrucker...you seem knowledgeable and practical in the running of your business, but I genuinely see good customers of mine in trouble daily with DAF trucks. I have ran both Kenworth and Peterbilts and found them excellent trucks....so much so I find it difficult to believe that DAF is wholly owned by Paccar since 1996.

The MX engine is continuing to give trouble on this side of the the big pond and many a hard pressed operator will testify to poor back up from DAF.

I lived and worked in the US many moons ago,and I am somewhat familiar with the operating conditions Stateside. I feel very dubious about the success, durability and reliability of the MX engine in the US. Its track record to date over here, hasn't been very good,

Lets just say...I'm still not convinced and would certainly let someone else be a guinea pig. Peterbilt and kenworth are excellent trucks......but not with the dreaded MX engine. If I were buying one....it would certainly be with a Cummins,Detroit,Caterpillar.....excellent engines......
