A Day in the Life of a Fuel Hauler

    I get paid by the load in fact the way we operate it's how I make my money.If got paid by the hour it just wouldn't work but with that said I do go on the clock for down time I.E. if I'm waiting for repairs in the shop or if the rack is down and I have to wait. I just keep up with my time add it to my trip sheet and boss pays me accordingly has worked well for me for almost 20 years.

    How would that work if the loading rack went down for 6 hours? Would you get paid your full pay? I hope so.

    I wouldn't haul anything for $10 an hour, and def not fuel....

    I get load pay and make about 1200-1400 a week working about 50-55 hours.

    I'm the only guy at my branch of Solar Transport that hauls 6 loads a night and sometimes 7 but other guys make the same money as me.

    I've been driving for 11 years, just got into fuel a few months ago and I'm already the highest production driver at our district out of about 60 guys.

    It's really not hard work, but I came from foodservice for the last year so I'm a go getter.

    Walked in from working at Sygma, learned how to haul fuel in 3 weeks, been making 1200+ a week since.

    If anyone has any questions or would like some advice on how to speed themselves up or anything else, send me a message and I'll explain what I do.

    Come March 1st of 2012 I'll have 20 years with the company we are a mom and pop operation only have the one transport but they have been really good to me and return I give em a good days work. Have decent Ins and a 401k. Raised five kids was able to put em all through school and sent em on their way LOL and now it's just the little women and I.Sold our house 4 years ago got a cottage out on a lake slowing down now enjoying life. I have about 10 more years to go before thinking about retiring. Gashauling has been good to me wouldn't want to do anything else.

    Good post. I hope some of these new drivers pick up on how we invest our money for that raining day. The hard part is leaving the funds in there when you really need money. But still you're paying yourself back the interest it's just you can not increase your investment.

    Thought I would throw in my 2 cents. I haul fuel for an OKC common carrier. I have had my CDL for 6 months now and they hired me right out of VoTech. Generally it has been a good experience. The pay is on the low end of the scale but I knew that coming in as a rookie. After 6 months the pay went up a little so making more now. A lot of the drivers I talk with worked for my company before and went on to work as a dedicated driver for major companies making much more money and work hourly instead of by the load. It's sad because I like the company I work for now but the trend is they don't pay as well so when drivers get a year or two in they move on. Can't blame them and I probably will do the same if I'm not making what I need by then.

    It is a fun job, most days anyway. Love squeezing my rig in those tiny Mom & Pop stations between the low awning the dumpster and the idiots that either park on top of the drop or try to beat you in or out while you are backing in off a busy 4 lane street or highway. NOT!!!

    I work nights and have come to really like it. No lines at the rack, light traffic and pay differential.

    If you are thinking about being a fuel hauler safety and attention to detail (loading and delivering the right product into the right tank) are traits you must have. It is easy to get distracted and once the fuel starts to flow there is no turning back.

    No company or anyone can blame a driver for moving on to a better paying job.
