good luck. if you have any more questions feel free to ask. Our recruiter was Stephanie Young very nice lady and seemed honest and upfront about everything. -
Im not too sure how it all works. ive been driving trucks for awhile but im new to OTR
-
Sure it does....
So out of that $600 per week, how much would you say it spent in things like food and showers?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now as far as I understand Regional work, is that where you drive within say the NE region and are home every couple of days?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About leases, so it is NOT like a car lease? What if you walk away early? Don't you have a penalty? And over mileage charges?
Also, what about credit, and down payment considerations? How hard is it to obtain a lease on a truck when you have poor credit? And how much down?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I mean to say, that one of the reasons in getting my Class A was to, after 15 years increase my pay. No don't get me wrong, my buddy that I currently drive for is a good guy to work for, and the truck is a sweet ride for sure, but my pay is about the same as driving for the dump trucking company I drove for the past 5 years....My kids are getting to the grown stage, one in collage, and one in high school, so in the next couple of years I will have a little more freedom in what I do....But my credit is not good, although we are working on that, and since I had the kids early it has always been sort of a struggle, ya know?
So for the second act in my life I want to maximize my earnings to catch up....
Anyway, thanks, you have been a help....

Now this week has been a different story.....still good revenue...just had to run 6 short loads to get it.....Can't wait til' Lo gets her CDL.....we can start running more east-west....instead of north-south....

hey steve,
great thread you've got going here. extremely interesting. i was just wondering if you were pulling van or reefer? i am also looking into going OTR again after 6.5 years out of it. i am half way through a degree in mathematics with an A+ average, but life is catching up to me. i'm in my middle 30's, and my lovely wife is pregnant with our first child...anyway a buddy of mine just finished his bachelors program with an A average and was offered a job making $15.00 an hour!!!!!!
needless to say i am very frustrated, because college is hard work, especially the math (not that i'm complaining....i LOVE math)...then when all the hard work is done, make $15.00 an hour or just $30,000 a year as a high school math teacher.....
with my new family, im looking to get back into OTR, being an O/O, hopefully to make enough money to make a good living for my family and retire early.....credit is not an issue, mine is excellent, so im thinking of purchasing instead of leasing...
anyway, you could probably live without all the detail of my life, but i said all that to say this: you guys are truly inspirational, and living proof that the American Dream is still alive.
God Bless and i wish to everyone safe miles and financial rewards for the risk you are taking.....
thanks,

Thanks guys.....for your vote of confidence...and your kind words. Tommy, If you've read my thread....then you know that I got out of the OTR business for about 13 years... Finally went to work locally for Con-way.....THE BEST MOVE I EVER MADE....(especially with young children) I had excellent benefits....Family coverage insurance was the most important thing to me(besides getting to watch the girls play ball and grow up)...The OTR lifestyle is really taxing on the family. I'm so glad that I was afforded the opportunity to spend most of my kids school years with them...It truly is a time that is special....I'm not trying to talk anybody out of coming out here and enjoying this lifestyle.....'cause I love it....but...I gave it up in a heartbeat when my 6 year old told me she wanted me home to see her play basketball.....AND I LOVED EVERY GAME! I wouldn't trade those years @ home for any amount of money...... One suggestion... check into Con-way....FedEx (Freight).....or any of the Union LTL companies in your area..The money is great...and the benefits can't be beat.....then when that baby isn't a baby any more....come on out and take my place....I'll be done by then!!!!!

Tommy....I left the road to spend 13 years with my family while my girls grew up.....BY FAR, THE BEST MOVE I EVER MADE... I would never try to discourage anyone from pursuing this dream....but, I was able to make good money....and be home every day.....and have possibly the best benefits in the industry.....Now, my main benefit is getting to spend every day with my wife.... I wouldn't trade the time I got to spend watching my girls grow up for ANY amount of money.... I would check into the LTL companies in my area..... Con-way, FedEx (Freight), Roadway.....etc. All of which pay top pay....home every day(mostly)....and by far the best benefits for a growing family. Whatever you decide....I wish you luck.
