Question time. I'm in the LA Metro area at the first shipper I am picking up from at 08:00 tomorrow. Second pickup is at Santa Fe Springs at 14:00. Third pickup is Sunday at 23:00 in Kearney, Nebraska. The most direct route and the route that matches up to the dispatched miles(1370) to Kearney is up I-15 and across I-70. Problem is the forecast is for snow all day across the Colorado Mountains I-70 corridor Saturday which is when I would be crossing it. I have never had to request a routing change before, but under the circumstances it would seem appropriate. The shortest route I have mapped that would supposedly keep me clear of the storm would be to take I-40 across to Tucumcari, then US 54 from Tucumcari to Liberal, KS, US 83 from Liberal, KS up to McCook, Neb, and US 6/34 over to Kearney, Neb. Alternate route is 1500 miles. Question is how do I go about requesting the alternate route and any chance they'd approve it? Thanks for any replies.

By the way, I have Never driven on snow and Ice before and this (I-70 mountains) is not exactly where I wanna get broke in at.
A little bit of slush and that's about it for my winter driving experience.

Ahhh, come on buddy....where's your sense of adventure? Curious to see the answer to your question. My first (and only so far) experience in the snow was coming back from Ft Wayne, IN. Took six hours to go 200 miles. Usually takes 2.5-3 hrs. Got lucky though, it was all just slush under the snow. It still was no fun. I remember we talked about this exact scenario the last time we talked on the phone. One of the best tips I have received so far about driving in the snow so far is to keep your RPM's up as much as possible. That way the drivetrain is further up the torque band (only way I can come up with to explain this). That way if you have to give it fuel it won't spin the tires so easy. The night i drove back in that storm, I got the tractor a little sideways coming out of a rest area. Glad it happened there and not on the interstate. Good luck to you.Last edited: Jan 6, 2012

Call your fleet manager.
Usually that will involve having csr contact customer.
Unless customer is willing to pay for the out of route miles, rarely does this happen.
but you wont know, if you dont ask.
40 this time of year is a crap shoot, you might5 find yourself in just as bad conditions across there.
Best bet is head up 15, to beaver. check weather across 70 & 80.
its only 45 miles more across 80, might not be any better but its a option.xlsdraw Thanks this.
