Why couldn't you get a yard hostler's job WHILE YOU ATTEND COLLEGE? Get your degree- then pay it off by driving trucks. Get a bad attitude like us and use your college degree to retire and post bitter, angry comments forever on TTR.

    Problem SOLVED.

    P.S.- YOU'RE WELCOME !!

Do what you want to do but then again you will have to live with yOur decision. More than likely 2 yrs from Making this decision you will have your own foot so far up your ##### that your daddy wouldn't even have room to Put his uP there. I was in the the situation as you. Son of a trucker and thought it would be cOol, now I stick my foot up my arse daily for not college and getting a real job. GOod luck to you. If my momma was still alive and knew I was a driver she would blow a head gasket and Probaly just put me out of my misery.. Good luck to you. P.s. trucker is fun for about the first year.

You have to make up your own mind, but that $.40/mile figure is awful high for a new driver. I bet more companies are closer to $.30 than they are to $.40. I saw on a Werner thread something about $24.5/mile or something like that. You also have to figure you have to spend more money living on the road than you do at home, as the truck stops are overpriced, and you can't just take a big truck to other stores. I see many threads on this site of drivers with $300 or less take home per week, and on the road that's not much. Even if you don't have any other bills, you'llneed a cell phone, you mentioned the internet, and at least part of your check will go to insurance. Oh, and food, you add all this up and $3-400/week isn't much.
I understand your wanting to do it, and I wouldn't tell you one way or the other, as I am doing it and enjoying it. I've made it 3 1/3 years, and am making better money, but I was lucky and got with a company that does pay a little higher than most. I made $53,500 my 2nd full year, which is not bad, but made about the same my third year because I spent a little more time at home.
You have to decide, but if you think you will make much over $30,000 your 1st year, I would doubt that. Just don't make a hasty decision, read many threads on this site and make an educated decision.
    Good Luck

I wouldn't eat at truck stops, that's just dumb. Maybe once a week as a cheat meal, like I said I'm fit and athletic so I'd have a strict diet of chicken, whole wheat bread and milk. (It is possible to hook up a fridge, right?)

Taking home 30,000$ my first year sounds like a dream, lol. I know experience is the biggest factor, one or two years 50k isn't a pipe dream.

I wish somebody would have kicked my ### and made me stay in college. Had I only known how short 4 years of college really is, I would have stuck around.
