Okay old guys lol! I'm 58 and heading for Roehl training (RTDC) as we speak. School starts Monday and I'm riding the Grey dog to Marshfield, WI (literally, like as I write this). Markus, I've been through your posts and followed you through it and I'd really be disappointed to see you back out after all you've been through. I believe it will get easier. I took on this career change after 40 years iof running (and owning) restaurants. The last one tanked after 20 yrs and there's not a lot of options at 58. Always wanted to do this though it's probably not fair to the Mrs. But like I said, not many options, gotta put food on the table...Wedge, great to see you on here too, who do you drive for?

    Wedge and grusco Thank this.

Hey There J Bear....I am so glad you wrote to tell me about your coming adventure...it really is one. Keep a journal...or start your own thread here...it will help somebody else...and provide a record of your life. Wedge inspired me 6 or 8 months ago when I found his thread... Do yourself a favor..and read it..Here's the link. http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...6-beginning-the-long-awaited-cdl-process.html

The reason I went OTR is that during my research I learned that the coming in for home time and going out after is where drivers lose money. When the planners see that you have home time scheduled, they must plan a route back to your home terminal, or where ever you are planning to take your time off. That can easily end up costing you a trip or dispatch.

I stay out at least 4 weeks at a time. 5 weeks is my norm. That helps to keep the income level up there. I do see the income loss every time I come home in the next pay settlement.

For me, going back out never seems to be a problem being based in the Atlanta area. It seems I get dispatched before I can put my laundry away.

JBear, I drive for US Xpress.

Roehls a good outfit to start with. I have a very good friend who drives for them and he's very pleased with his choice.

    Good luck in Marshfield.

    Mark....sorry for the hi-jack.

Wedge is right...after each home time, you do come back a little more effecient...and that builds confidence. On the money thing..it is hard to put the past to bed. In another life, when I had my own advertising agency...I hired a really great gal to run the office, and do secretarial type things. She had had a career at General Electric as a "gal Friday". And, for the most part she was great..but every so often, when she'd get down...she'd say something like..." I used to make twice as much at GE". As a small business owner, I couldn't pay her what she used to make....I paid her what I could afford...my business and GE were two different worlds. It's not exactly the same now..but as a new , inexperienced driver...I'm not worth anything close to what a guy with 10....or even 2 years experience is. Get over it! The reality is....the mortgage is still there..and it's due...the car Insurance and the electric bill still has to be paid....it's time for a reality check....we need the work! We've worked hard to get our CDL and learn what we've learned about trucking. Count your lucky stars! The actual unemployment rate is about 19%....when you count the people who've given up trying to find a job. This is a wonderful opportunity! Let's go for it!

I'm experiencing the potential fringe benefits of part of why I got into this. More and more I get to catch sight of the beauty this land holds. The way the hills gently roll over one another. The farm animals going about their day. Like the horses I saw breaking into a trot just because.

Happen to be in Pa. Just west of Allentown. Came from Columbus Ohio.

I'm really looking forward to Springtime and what the newness of that season will bring.

They gave me lots of room and forgiveness. You'll have to go back to your OC for a few hours of remedial training.,,probably rewatching some computer videos...then a discussion with your DBL. a lot will depend on your attitude..good lock...I'm sure things will be fine. Sounds like you're okay?

yeah, wounded pride more than anything. Dumb boneheaed wasnt fully paying attention cuz i'm not on the "road" mistake!!
I did see it as a learning opportunity though, right off.

Situational awareness applies any time you are behind the wheel ANYWHERE!!!! Particularly at a shipper/receiver. Hit a yard jockey right at the landing gear of the trailer he just picked up. I was trying to get lined up to park BT and go in the S/R office to find out about my load when he as passing me on my right. Didnt even think to look in my right mirrors. I certainly will from now on, though.

Think , I'm bummed at having to sit more than anything. have an 05 with 789K on it to train in solo. Waiting for an answer from GB on how to procede with the repair.
