Running more miles at a higher cost per mile to make up the difference of the higher cost of running faster - that's a BRILLIANT business plan!

$3700 per quarter x 4 quarters = $14,800 savings in a year. I guess what it all comes down to is: why are you trucking? For me it's a business with a bottom line that needs to be high enough to justify doing it. I also get a sense of pride and accomplishment from doing it well and efficiently. Others may enjoy the feeling of being Billy Big Rigger at any cost. I get my BBR fix from passing the same trucks going up the hill that passed me going down the hill. Running 62 in my ungoverned truck that produces 750hp at the end of the day I pull into the same truck stop as the guy who passed me doing 75 three times during the day. If you don't believe it then try it for week.

Your tire costs, maintenance costs and insurance costs are reduced as well. Your license stays clean and CSA score stays low. Oh yeah, and watch your stress level go down too.

IMO this is one of the best examples of the mentality of the average trucker and why they are so easily tricked into making people who use logic and facts into making them wealthy. These are the same people that tricked you into believing that more miles is where the money is. Anytime you can generate more revenue running less miles at a lower cost you are the winner.

    Here's something to consider...

    It's Friday...

You're running 58 mph (to save fuel) and you have a 5 PM appointment. The problem is you can't make that appointment unless you can run 70 mph. And you have a live load waiting for you that deliver's back home Monday.

If you keep running 58 you will miss your appointment, and your backhaul, and you have a weekend layover to boot...

My solution is to run 70 mph, make your delivery, reload and be back home the next day. So you "waste" $50.00 worth of fuel... but you now have a good paying load back on the truck and will be home for the weekend. Monday morning you are ready to go, with a 34 hour restart, and can deliver and reload with more $$$ in your pocket than you had before.

This scenario happens to me almost every week... I like being home... for me it can make a $900.00 difference in revenue every week... beats saving $50.00 worth of fuel.

IMHO of course.... and don't give me that "plan your day better" rookie-speak.... I DID plan my day...the shipper and Chicago traffic didn't...

My truck is goverened at 76 mph (peddle and cruise), on the road I keep it at 75 mph. All of our day cabs are set between 74 mph and 76 mph (depends on the computer), we have two freightshakers that will 80 and 83 respectively. When I first got the truck is was set at 65, consistenly averaged 6.5 to 6.9 mpg, now, on a good day I'll get 5.9 mpg.

HMMM..... I did $5600 / 800miles in 4 days -:biggrin_25524: and I can prove it. And I think I averaged about 4 mpg. Of course I had to idle for 2 nights.

Since I got tired of driving other peoples Governed vehicles and started buying my own fuel, I've tried to learn how to drive smarter and not harder. And my receipts and Calculator tell me that My 650hp 3406E will give me around 5.75 mpg if I keep the rpm's under 1600. That puts me at around 70+ mph. If I run west TX where I can go 85, my mpg drops to around 4 to 4.5, less with crosswinds.

With that being said, more often than not, you'll see me slidin on the right side. But it sure feels good to pass a line of trucks when I'm grossing over 95K going up a hill.
