After spending lots of time reading posts here on the board, researching company training programs, private schools and talking with recruiters, I have decided that paying for and attending the local community college driving program is the right thing for my personal situation.
The program is 8 weeks, consisting of 80 hours of classroom training, 304 hours range and driving, and grants 12 credit hours upon completion. Cost is $965.00 plus around $200 for books, DOT physical, driving record and CDL-A permit.
If anyone's interested, I can post about my experience with the school as I progress through the program.

Got the CDL-A permit today, passed first try with 98% general, 98% air brakes, 80% combination vehicles (forgot to study for combination vehicles test ). DOT physical done, got the card, and the whiz quiz results coming back Monday (I didn't study for that one either).
Tomorrow the school gets my app paperwork and they'll probably want some cash to go along with it. Class starts on the 27th. -
Finalized the application and registration this morning, and start classes on the 27th. It will take a little over 2 months to get my CDL going this route, but at least it will be paid for and I won't be tied to a training company and earning chicken feed for 12-18 months.
Everett, bullhaulerswife and Spacecoast Thank this. -
I went there about 12 years ago. Excellent course then. Pay attention, ask questions, and you'll do fine.
windsmith Thanks this. -
Just left the DMV after testing for hazmat, doubles / triples and tanker. Scored 100 on hazmat, missed one on doubles / triples and missed 2 on tanker. Guess I didn't study enough.
6 more weeks of driving, and then I'll be turned loose to terrorize you guys that are on the roads. -
Have you gotten any pre-hires yet??
-
I do know that I'm not particularly interested in dry van - I'd rather start with temp controlled, then move to flatbed / heavy haul and / or tanker. -
I believe one of the guys that run the program is the safety guy or something at Inman Trucking in Leland. They were coast to coast team refer back when I was there. Just putting it out there if you're interested. (and if they're still around).

As far as flatbed, I believe Cypress has a terminal or drop yard over the bridge. I also think there was a flatbed company that recruited out of the school. The name escapes me at the moment, but I will think of it. McElroy is it. Whether they still do or not, I do not know.
