That's a great list, but I would add one thing...
If you wear prescription glasses, bring a second pair with you just in case. Even if it's the old pair you had, bring them and put them in the truck somewhere.
CDL in hand... Now What ? Decision time, that's what...

Back on the road after a nice 6 day break. Left home pre-dawn and made it to shipper in Winchester, VA at 07:30. Dropped MT trailer and hooked onto trailer preloaded to the gills volume-wise, though not much weight. 16 pallets of insulation material, each pallet 6'x4'x7.5' - all I needed to do was secure and tarp.
Ran a total of 477 miles before the 14 hour clock was down to 30 minutes remaining. Stopped at one of the new service areas on the OH turnpike near Cleveland. About 250 miles left to go plus a fuel stop on the way to the consignee in Saginaw, MI. Delivery time scheduled for 11:00 so to bed now and up early again tomorrow.
Stay safe and have fun.

Very traveler / trucker friendly with clean facilities, free showers and good food selection. Highly recommended.

I love stopping at the new OHIO Turnpike Travel Centers. They really put some thought into what the Trucker Drivers need!

Made it to consignee in Saginaw. MI at 10:00. There were quite a few vans in line to be loaded or unloaded. I went in and was greeted by a friendly guy who said they would unload me as soon as I took off the tarps. Wind picked up a little just as I was trying to fold the tarps. They had me unloaded and I was working on my trip plan for the next load assignment by noon.
The new plan called for me pick up 10000 pounds of steel going to Wisconsin. I called the shipper to confirm the pickup and they said there was no steel to be shipped there, only dunnage.
Drove down to Warren, MI in the Detroit area and sure enough picked up a load of dunnage going to Saukville, WI. There are eight loosely banded bundles of 8' long 4" triangular cross section hardwood pieces that are used when shipping coils. I used extra straps to ensure the pieces would not come loose and slide out. It is not the prettiest load ever seen but at least it's secure.

Hey Perpetual,
I passed my CDL!(me kissing the ground)
(my instructors and examiner kissing the ground). Thanks again for sharing your story, it helped keep me focused and on track through the difficult times of learning and times of self doubt. Looks like I will be going to Schneider in a few weeks for orientation. A friend of mine and Marcus's story convinced me to go big orange. (You do have such a nice looking truck though).

Perp: nice thread. I'm in CDL school (weekends) and will finish in mid-May. Pre-hires from US Express (no thanks), Werner (NO thanks), Schneider (hmmm) and Roehl. I also considered FB and liked Maverick a whole lot. Talked to a recruiter who advised I call just before finishing CDL school. Also interested in TMC. My decision making on FB or no was similar to yours. I'm 63 and pretty healthy but then thought the challenge of becoming a good driver was first priority so don't want to complicate that with learning FB skills also.
Schneider or Roehl was my next choice. Schneider does a whole lot right when it comes to rookies. Reading the thread on the recent tornados in Dallas and the company reaction only strengthened my good opinion of that company. But in the end it's Roehl for me.
Today I faxed all the stuff they wanted (Schedule C's for 3 yrs self employment, contact for a current bus driving part time job I have with the local district). Roehl recruiter (I've never spoken to one, only email) mentioned a physical but since I just got my DOT medical card not sure that applies to me. Also advised the recruiter I would not be available until after the school year because I want to finish my bus driving obligation. My step daugher's high school graduation event is June 9th then I'm ready to hit the road. I'm assuming all will go well. Like you, as you made the Roehl decision, I am excited to see what I can do for this company as they provide an opportunity to another rookie.
I'll probably thread most of this step by step once I'm further down the road. Thanks for your efforts and I'll keep my eye open for a FBer driving the big red. I'll be pulling a van.Perpetual Thanks this. -
Now the fun begins
Best of luck at the pumpkin patchdocholaday Thanks this. -
