I really need help getting started!

Go through school and get a job as a yard spotter until you're old enough to be accepted in an OTR job.

 

Go to a local school and then check out local dirt haulers with dump/end dump trucks. Get some experience there. If schools not an option due to costs, study your DMV book and go get your permit. Aslo you can go to your local school bus company who will train you for FREE to get your CDL as long as you work for them. Then go work for dirt haulers in your area. Its challenging and great to learn. Work your way up to belly dump, side dump, pups, and semi end dumps. Your always working in tight situations, around buildings, overhead surprises, and un usual ground situations as in soft mud, sink holes, etc. which makes you VERY observant of your surroundings. I think thats really a big key to building your experience for later. Always be aware of your surroundings

 

A yard spotter docks trailers and shuttles them in the yard. It's a great way to learn the basics of driving and backing. With a school behind you, you can apply directly to warehouses for the position. Low pay- in Texas- at first, but lots of room for advancement. Plus you'll be getting experience to use OTR.

Yard drivers are called "Yard Dogs, Yard Hostlers, Spotters, or Mules".

 

Go to school. The school's primary job is to help you pass your CDL exam.

The downside is that since you're 21, you will be hard pressed to find an OTR company that will hire you. Minimum age is generally 24, due to insurance, although I have seen the larger companies hire as young as 22.

 

Start calling! Talk to the big company recruiters and ask.
Like I said before tho, your local school bus company like Laidlaw or First Student with train you to get your CDL at no cost.
I did it in 1990, drove 98 passenger bus for one yr in Los Angeles at age 21. Then I also went on to driver redi-mix trucks, dump trucks etc.
Due to my age it was hard for companies to insure me.
Yes I understand your excitement! I also know what its like being turned down ALLOT at that age But keep trying and dont let anyone detour you if you really want to do this.

A good way to get your CDL for free is go to coke, pepsi or any other beverage company. Apply to get hired on as a local delivery driver. They will train you with their trucks and pay for your CDL. Unless things have changed in the last few years I know that is an option for you to look at.
