Annnd now, the Sage Report! Man, I can't believe I'm almost done. We went over extreme driving conditions today.. Tomorrow's the last day of classroom work, then I drive tomorrow night, twice on Thursday, twice on Friday, and twice on Saturday! (If I didn't know better, I'd say they're tryin to get me the heck outta there! Which works for me, 'cept that it kinda puts the rush on the jobsearch!)
Hopefully I'll find something soon. Gordon tells me they're currently looking at other applicants (what a nice way of saying "um.. no."). I have possibly caught a break from May Trucking -- talked to them today and they are proceeding with my background check! (Now the problem is talking my wife into not leaving if I'm gone more than a couple weeks at a time...) :biggrin_25521:

Good call on May and I hope it works out for you. Give JBS a call as well and see if they are willing to give you a chance. Getting something that isn't OTR is going to be difficult. I know Swift and Werner run regional out of Denver which would get you home quicker. What about going OTR and taking your wife with you?

I think Schneider is doing regional out of Denver also. I contacted them yesterday asking if they did pre-hires, and they don't. However she was thrilled when I told her I was planning on attending SAGE in Cheyenne, and told me when I was a week out from graduating, please apply. Seems like a good company, but I'm new so what do I know.

That's a good call and one I have recommended often. Schneider does a lot of regional out of Denver and they have a nice yard off I-70 near Aurora. I drive by it when I take loads of fuel to the loves out in Bennett. I also checked with Schneider when I was attending Sage and even applied with them. They had an orientation date for me but I ended up pursuing something else. Not a bad place to get some experience IMO.

The key is to get that valuable experience for 12 to 24 months then you can write your ticket to just about any job at that point. The first year or two are usually the worst in terms of pay and as many others have pointed out on here, we all have to start at the bottom and work our way up. Keep your driving record and DAC clean and you will be able to get in with the more prominent companies. Or you may really like working with Schneider and just stay with them. Schneider does have an awesome freight base and you can get into different kinds of freight such as tankers if you wish.

Keeps us posted on how things are going for you and how its working out at Sage. When do you begin attending Sage?

I haven't set a time for SAGE yet, but will probably be around the middle of May. I'm trying to time it so that I finish around the same time my child is born, which is estimated as 7-11. Right now I'm trying to figure out what the process is to do the pre-hire thing. This is a totally new concept to me, and SAGE didn't explain to me how to do this. Do I just contact companies and see if they do pre-hires, do I apply with them? I'm kind of lost as to where to start with these. I've contacted Central Refrigerated and Schneider, and they both said they don't do pre-hire agreements, yet someone else on this forum said they had a pre-hire from Central. Maybe I'm going about things the wrong way. I'm not really sure.

No problem brother I can answer those questions for you. Pre-hires are something that Sage likes to see you have before you start your training. I had pre-hires from Werner, Swift, USA Truck, Watkins and Shepard and some other places that I can't remember. The pre-hire is only worth about as much as the paper its written on. All it is basically saying is that based on the information you have provided, they are willing to look at you as a possible orientation candidate. Most of the pre-hires even state that it is in no way a contract or agreement for hire.

Now Sage requires that you have three pre-hires for attending their training course. My recommendation to you is to go ahead and get your three pre-hires from three of the big companies like Werner, Swift and Watkins Shepard. That way you have fulfilled the requirement from Sage. Remember that the pre-hires aren't really worth a darn. Especially considering you still have to go through Sage and get your CDL. There was a guy in my class that was out of work for two years due to several shoulder surgeries. He had a pre-hire from Werner and every intention of working for Werner once he finished his training and had his CDL in hand. To make a long story short, he completed his Sage training and got his CDL. He then approached Werner about the job and they turned him down saying that he didn't have a job for the past two years so there wasn't anything they could do for him. He explained the situation to them about the shoulder surgeries and that he had a complete medical release from his doctor and Werner didn't care. So even though they had given him a pre-hire and he had spoken with their recruiting over the phone and was told he was good to go, they backed out and didn't give him the time of day.

Don't put any confidence in the pre-hire letters and just get them to satisfy the requirement at Sage. Once you are a few weeks out from completing the training and having your CDL, really start talking to Schneider and putting your apps in to where you would like to work. :)

So in actually getting these pre-hires completed, do you just contact the companies and ask if they do pre-hires? Do you have to have them fill out the form from SAGE? Do you have to apply with the companies first? Sorry for asking all these questions, the pre-hire thing is a totally new concept for me.

You can use the sage form it you can contact the company and they will email it to you. Yes you can apply with the companies to get a pre-hire. Best thing to do is call different companies recruiting dept. And ask them about a pre-hire. Check with USA Trucking as they will get your info and contact sage with a pre-hire for you. It's easy as that and there is no obligation to you or to the company.
