Aquired tastes is the words I am looking for here, Mr. Gremlin once a bad taste gets in your mouth, its heck to get out, not too articulate with words here, though some of you are very gifted orators. I gave the thing a chance, it had even had a recent in framr at half a million like any older truck sould have ( going with cat deisals here ) but it did not perform like a deisel of that caliber should have, that reefer load was heck to begin with anyway. Too many frikkin contraptions on the inside for my tastes , never had one that complex, heck my hometime truck is an old f-100 from 1979 with a three on the tree....

Maybe not quite but #### close but when empty it's no problem, here's a video of an avoidance system by mercedes it shows how effective disc brakes with EBS are, at full on ,the brakes will lift you out of your seat, if you don't have a seat belt you will be using the steering wheel to hold u in your seat, no joke! And believe me, it's relaxing to know you have that kinda braking behind you, I remember drum brakes, always looking out for the next obstacle, now it's like any trip in your car!

Scania that was somewhat interesting, though there are alotof new things i have no urge to try myself, would like to try that truck on for size just once to see if what these fellows are saying is true, I am stubborn to a fualt, not unreasonable

I can switch mine to manual and with the paddle under the steering wheel I can choose any gear I want, I can skip as many gears as I want, in manual it'll do anything I tell it to do, thing is cos it's based on a synchro it's very smooth, never gets mixed up and you can over ride it instantly, ok sometimes you need to tell it when to change cos the truck can't see the road ahead but that's just a nudge with your finger ! Modern ones are very good and very reliable too, I never had any problems with mine except one that needed a new speed sensor but that was it!

Scania man thanks for the video. About the only problem I see is what happens when some yahoo cuts you off at highway speeds? Does the truck slam on the brakes? That would be a bad thing.:biggrin_25513:

On my scania when I get on the motorway I can set the cruise control and downhill speed control together and the truck will cruise at a set speed, the autobox takes care of going uphill and the downhill speed control works going downhill, that puts on the retarder to stop the truck picking up speed going downhill and will pull the service brakes if the retarder won't hold it so it's kinda like autopilot only you gotta steer, it's possible to drive a whole day without ever touching the controls except of course the steering wheel, handy for reading my responses on 'the truckers report' ! Lol. A retarder is the best think since Thai massages were invented to relieve stress! Never have to worry about overheating the brakes.

It's probably your idea of hell but I've had enough driving, if I had another line of work I'd be gone at it in a flash! So the easier my life is the better and I really do feel less stressed when I get home. It gives me a better quality of life at home. Next truck I get will have all the gizmos, lane departure warning, active cruise the lot, so I can reply on this forum without the fear of crashing at all haha, that would make the day pass faster

Scania yes I would have to agree with okidokie here, though I did like its braking power. Though still stewin' it in my head, it takes alot to change my way of thinkin, maybe that last truck was a mold between mack and volvo still didn't like felt a bit off. Slowly comin into the 21st centry in baby steps here .....

To be honest I wouldn't like that system at all, I'd have it switched off with all that beeping, i only posted it cos it shows the effectiveness of the brakes, it's the first video I found, there's probably better ones there, I'm sure it would hit the brakes I'm not sure, the thing is brakes here are EBS, that means the truck won't jacknife or skid and you can still steer perfectly when on full brakes even in the wet!
