Bull hockey. If you could coast after the construction zone, you could coast in the construction zone. The transmission had no clue where you were so your "blowing through" was your choice if it happened.

All these people so afraid of a piece of equipment. Autoshifts work just fine. SO do manuals. If you don't want one don't get one. Believing it adds inch's to your package:biggrin_25526:

Ok youngsters.:biggrin_25525: You can set Jakes up tight enough to skid your drivers. There are applications to driving a truck that are learned on Goat trails or haul roads with grades that start @ 17% and up. Sometimes only brakes, gears and power will get you down that road. Now back to your regular scheduled program.

Before you post, perhaps you should know a little something about what you're posting about. Yes, SOME are automated manual boxes...but if you spec'd your truck with an Allison automatic, you'd have a torque converter. Yes, you can buy a class 8 truck with an Allison auto. The highway series is spec'd to handle up to 565 hp & 1850 ft. lbs., and the rugged duty series is spec'd to 600 hp & 1850 ft. lbs.

An automated manual gearbox isn't going to be able to shift any quicker than a manual gearbox operated by a competent driver. It still has to wait for the engine speed to match the road speed for the gear you need to get into.

I never said anything about not being able to tow the truck, because the drive shaft gets disconnected prior to towing anyway...so the transmission is not an issue even if it were stuck in gear.

Starter issues don't take anything more than shutting the truck off to cause headaches. Approach the guard shack. Shut the truck off while you check in. Walk back to your truck and the starter won't engage. With a manual, you can be pull started by anyone with a rope or chain. When I drove wreckers, as long as the truck had air we'd send the little F350 wrecker out to do the pull start rather than rolling out in the heavy duty wrecker....didn't matter if the truck was loaded or not on level ground, since you don't have to be rolling all that fast to get the engine to turn over. Once the truck is started, you can drive it to a shop or to a parts store to get a new starter. In an automatic, you are waiting for a wrecker to tow you to a shop, or a service truck to come out to you to install a new starter. Pull starting is not an option.

If you are parked in the middle of nowhere and can't get the truck started in the morning, and your truck leaked out all of it's air (which it wouldn't have if you fixed that air leak), you can usually find another truck to air you up. Many trucks can back-fill the tanks through the red glad hand...just lock 'em up with another truck and air up the tanks. Some trucks have a valve which prevents that...in which case you can (if you have a quick-connect on your air tanks) use any air line to get air from another truck...just plug into the quick-connect. You've got options. Once the truck is aired up, it can roll...bump the clutch and it starts.

How many trucks carry jumper cables? If the batteries are dead, a jump pack isn't going to do much...so there really is no point in carrying one. You're going to need a running vehicle or shore power...you've got to charge the batteries.

1 bad battery is all it takes for a truck to not start....even if the others are still good.

Just turn the stupid things off before you enter any towns. If you are too lazy or too inconsiderate to turn them off in town, put the mufflers back on. Just because YOU like the sound doesn't mean anybody else cares to have to hear it....and the more people you irritate with your jakes, the more laws that get passed prohibiting their use.
