A note to the anti-auto crowd

I do know this. We weren't in town. We were in the country. I use my engine brake in town because you can't hear it. If i had a straight piped exhaust I wouldn't use them in town. I personally wouldn't run straights but rather a good free flowing muffler that still keeps the Decibels down.

I had straights on my diesel a few years ago, i wish I still had my truck.

also what kind of exhaust did you have on your truck, i have a 1994 F-250 with the 7.3 Powerstroke (1st gen, 1st month of manufacture in fact) and it doesnt sound anything like that (yes i know the Non turbo IDI's sound differant to begin with. Mines got a 5" straight exhaust from the turbo back.

Mine was an idi. Naturally aspirated with no Turbo. From the manifold back I had 2.5 inch straight pipe going into 5" tips. I had the cats and muffler cut off. Real straights, and they were true dual. No x pipe or h/cross over. Also had the exhaust exit from behind the rear tire at a 90* angle that way it would echo off of buildings. Every time id go to Gainesville id get on it and it was like pure ecstasy. I love loud pipes.

Also mine was a '94 made a couple.months before they started selling them with turbos. It didn't get up and go but it sounded sweet! Lol.

Also the first owner was my neighbor, he bought it when I was 4. I used to ride around in the back of it. The second owner was a mile down the road. I was the third owner, they traded me straight up for a '96 s10 4 Banger 5 speed. I think I got the better end of the bargain. My 7.3 had 249,000 miles and the s10 had 30,000 lol

Ya ya I know about Allison transmissions but who in their right mind is Goin to put one in a general haul truck? They are only any use for service or military vehicles, also they can't be put in a truck bigger than 420 hp, there are a couple of 1000hp show trucks with them but they are not working trucks, I'm willing to bet more than 90% of autos in America are semi autos!

Yes a modern syncro based auto shift will shift faster than a manual, if you'd driven one you'd know that!

Everyone here carries jumper cables, if not 24v booster packs that will start anything

Actually scania man, the Chevrolet silverado uses the Allison transmission with the duramax. Its a full auto and people have show trucks in diesel power magazine that dyno at 1000+ HP at the wheels and are every day trucks. Granted when they use them for every day use their not pushing nitro, so their closer to 800hp in a pickup. With stock transmission and they hold up.

Yup. You know SOOOOOO much about the Allison transmissions, and yet you are still spouting inaccurate statements such as that they can't be put in a truck bigger than 420 hp. If you'd read my post...or done a little research and looked up the specs at Allison's website....you would know that the "highway" model is rated up to 565 hp/1850 ft. lbs, and the "rugged duty" model is good up to 600 hp/1850 ft. lbs. That is strong enough to handle most of the big bore engines on the market today.

I have no need to drive one. I don't care how car-like a truck with a "syncro based" auto shift drives...I'm not driving a car, and I don't like automatics in cars either. I'm perfectly capable of shifting the gears for myself, and find the manual transmissions easier to drive because they do what I want them to, when I want them to do it, how I want them to do it, where I want them to do it. You just don't have the control over the vehicle with an automatic.

Very few drivers on this side of the pond carry jumper cables. In fact I'm the only driver that I've ever run across that carries them in the truck.

Perhaps you ought to take your own advice....

We ain't talking pickups. Allison transmissions are available in class 8 trucks, too.
