Shouting out to another student that was 'lucky' enough to be hired by SS. Well first week is in. Good trainer. He is learning well. LOL. Dispatch sucks. Gave us a evening pickup/.time sensitive load at the end of 34 hr reset. Would have been a hell of allot more responsible to let us know the day b4 so we could adjust sleep pattern. Nothing like starting your tour just when youn should be sleeping. Yeah safety my ###!!! This profession needs the union back BAD!
Now they are thumping drivers on high idle percentage. No APU's. Right! Anything you say.

Miles are good as they can be. Keeping busy. Shippers and recievers tend to be off the beaten path. Allot of secondary road driving. Been staying staying mid-atlantic east to west region. Short miles per trip. Don't think we've done a trip over 400 miles in the two weeks. Not exactly OTR. About equal live load/unload and drop and hook. Longest delay was at Frito lay in Wooster, OH. About 3 hours.
Truck broke down leaving there. Something to do with the DEF system. Truck would not re-generate. Towed to Freightliner in Canton, OH. They took the shotgun approach. Just kept replacing parts. Had to get a motel. After 36 hours I guess they got it.
Trainer had been out 24 days at this point and was due 4 days off. Instead of dead heading us the just HAD to do another trip which was of course BS. So he was almost two days late getting his leave. We finished up yesterday near the Somerset, KY. terminal. Had my wife drive 5 hours to pick me up. No way was I going to spend 4 to 5 days in a motel.
One thing more of interest. At orientation, I was told that pickup and delivery times are figured with a specific formula to insure reasonable driving times. YET; my trainer told me there are UPS runs that you have to drive straight thru stopping for fuel only!!! I'll be refusing those trips. I WILL let my permanent dispatcher know this up front. WHY is UPS farming out freight? My guess is their own drivers won't do it. AND it's clearly cheaper. No wonder mandatory breaks is on the books. Can't happen soon enough for me.
Point of interest #2. They are constantly sending messages on idle time. Their standard is 30%. Ours is 65%. What can I say. Install APUs! Problem solved.

ups pays their drivers near double or more (for similar hours) , and they dont sit around, most home daily... theyre saving money and moving their freight that they move without hiring more people. ups is the best customer we have though, great rates and reliable freight, dedicated routes that get drivers home more...

you are correct as far as the ups runs being calculated so as to make it w/ only stopping to fuel...but theyre reasonable in my experience, if you need to stop for food or bathroom do it, dont tell them or ask for permission... if they ask why late... "this is how long it took"... "traffic"...."construction"...

You don't seem too thrilled so far crusty!

I would never work for an outfit like that, my company says idle if your hot or cold, run legal logs (match tolls and fuels) and no computers or GPS's on their trucks. I could never handle all of the regulations some of your companies have...

Sedain, Do I understand you correctly? You say that running straight through without meal or safety breaks is 'reasonable in your experience'.
Well, good luck to you. You can have every one of those trips. Running like that will make any normal person fatigued. It will be detrimental to your back and kidneys. Did you ever hear of blood clots forming in the legs from sitting to long? Well those blood clots have a nasty habit of traveling to the lungs and heart!!! Look it up. It is documented. You can do and think what you want. It's your life. Good luck.
Logan76. I don't seem thrilled? Quite the contrary. I feel good about this company and the future. Two other members asked me to post all I could about SS; as they are interested in applying. I'm just giving my take on things. I look at things like this: The truckload companies are in competition with one another obviously. The bottom like is basically the same. One is gonna have X bad and Y good. The next company will be the opposite. I like this company because they are privately owned and so far have not lied to me anout anything. They have been up front about everything except the UPS thing. In the long view it is a minor bump. If they don't like me being an hour 'late' I guess they'll kick me to the curb. 'No worries mate.'

Did that with Western Express last year. Submitted full application, including the lack of recent verifiable experience. I did apply for a student position, figuring a few weeks out with a trainer couldn't be all that bad.

Anyway, I arrived in Nashville for orientation, passed the physical and drug test with flying colors (and I didn't even study beforehand!), made it through orientation and load securement with zero problems. The last day of load securement, nobody seemed to know if I was a student, or experienced. I was asked if I could run a couple of tractors back and forth between Nashville, TN and the yard in SW PA. I was also offered a dedicated run for wallboard in SW PA.

Just before I get a truck assigned, I got pulled aside with two other people, and told that I didn't have enough recent experience to qualify as a student, and sent home. If I didn't have enough recent experience, wouldn't that have shown on my application, or during orientation when they ran my employment background?

    Bloody idiots.
