All the clutch does is basically line up the gears and tranny with the motor. If you are properly floating and timing shifting you are doing the same exact thing.

If you have to pay for a burnt out clutch you will learn to float on your next clutch!

Same with brakes, tires and fuel. If you have to foot the expense to replace them you will really learn to refine your driving. I personally can make go along way! Been there, got that receipt!

From what I see and hear in the truckstops,

a few folks need to use their clutch until they know what they're doing !!!

True, when u can get it into gear real smooth while using the clutch, you know it's a good shift. The trks I drive wears me out using the clutch due to 57 mph governed, hills and hauling swinging meat.So the less I have to use the clutch the better off I am.

On a side note, when fueling always wipe your feet off on a patch of dry pavement. When you get in the truck and release the brakes once you step on that clutch it can be like ice causing your foot to slip and clutch pop out. Usually resulting in stalling. Hopefully no one is walking in front of your truck when it happens!

Had this happen and have never forgotten to wipe the feet. Diesel can make your shoes slicker than ice!

All I say for sure is that I have floated for over 3 million miles and 30 years and I have never had a single transmission failure yet .

So you can take it for what it is worth but for myself I will keep on doing what I know works for me !

That's too funny, you probably drive an auto.

Floating gears wont do anything to a trans, why anyone would think that is bizarre.

I float up and down the gears, clutch is for taking off and putting her in reverse.

    Now for the downpayment...LOL!!

So super truckers float huh.I tried joining the super truckers club was denied request due to slow trk, using my blinker, stopping at all stop signs and being the friendly curteous truck driver.Could it be maybe frago don't know how to float and are jealous at the ones that do?

    right on chompi

    Excellent point about the bobtail.
I find that my truck shifts differently depending if I'm loaded, MT, or bobtail.
I actually experience more grind when empty/bobtail then when I'm loaded.

It's easier to float when heavy since the truck drops RPMs faster. If your having problems when light or bobtailing, turn on the engine fan. It acts like a mini-engine brake and will drop your RPMs fast enough to grab the next gear. Kind of like Jake shifting, but without the Jakes.

I tend to believe I do both but double clutching is such an inefficient waste especially to my left leg.
