The hopper guys who run local run up 200 miles or even more on a round trip, and some of them run across state lines, but the rules may vary by state.

I have heard of drivers driving from Austin, MN to Prairie Du Chien, WI through Iowa without a logbook and that distance is more than 100 miles on an odometer but is less than 100 air miles radius, or at least, that is what I have been told.

We have runs that go to the Twin Cities from here, the statute would get you to about Cannon Falls, MN and it can't be logged as local from either end, but it could be by someone starting out in say, Rochester, MN and driving to Postville, IA and then to South St. Paul, MN and then back to Rochester, MN, the 100 air mile radius wouldn't be exceeded by such a trip.

As long as you return to the home terminal, and the company has your previous days records...(time clock, even DIR's)...that record of driver time is acceptable for the previous 7, but if you know you will be exceeding the 100 air mile range, you should have some sort of documentation with you before you depart that day.

I am a new company driver and have questions re my log book. I am not interested in splitting nor do I really want to cheat on my logs. My trainer does "fudge" things a little but I feel it is chancy. My runs are about 9 days on the road and there is opportunity at some loading docks to get lots of Berth time as we have to wait. 550+ miles a day will get me there and back in time. But my trainer insists on not logging any off duty time. Only lines 2,3,4. He logs pre trips and fueling but no food stops. He does log short loading tims once in a while. Am I looking for trouble by not logging rest areas and meals. He doesnt like to log anything that will give time or milages as this might give his fudging away. I know most drivers do enhance their books but it still bothers me. Any help or advice appreciated. Our logs are all in the USA except for maybe a few hours in Canada at both ends. Any help appreciated.

Your trainer isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, is he? Simple answer, log it as you do it and you won't need to worry about violations. His violations are not your concern, just as he will not cover your butt for yours.

When you get to the shipper or consignee, log SB only, you cannot be off duty at the shipper or consignee. Spitting helps if you are going to pick up, not when delivering.

    A bit wrong here.

If they require you out of the truck in their lounge, you are not in the Sleeper Berth.

If they allow you to leave the premise and go for a walk, you are not in Sleeper Berth.

    SmoothShifter and otherhalftw Thank this.

The medic is offering a legitimate script....Line 1 (Off Duty) as long as you aren't responsible for the load or the equipment. Log Line 4 (on duty not driving) when involved in any responsible activity to the load while not driving....pre/post trip, verifying freight count, hand load/unload, chaining/un-chaining...etc, etc, etc.

Our carrier policy is if we are asked to leave the truck we can log off duty if we leave the keys in the truck and the customer has an employee qualified to use it.
If you purchase fuel with a fuel card the time of purchase is on the bill.

Didn't the rules on off duty just change? You can now log off duty while sitting in the driver's seat at the dock. We don't have to worry about the whole being in the sleeper only thing any more.
