If you are leaving because of a family problem or something of that nature and will be searching for new employment in the future, then 2 weeks notice would be to your benefit.
If you are bailing because of no pay, unsafe equipment, being asked to violate HOS, or other such reasons, then wait til you are at the terminal or where you were hired to quit. If you do it on the road, theres a good chance they will fire you and then put a "BAD" report on your DAC for abandonment, which will hurt your job hunt.
The ideal way to quit in this instance, is to have another job lined up, then you can move over to your new job and not lose any time.

Giving your dispatcher the bird while you throw the keys in their face usually gets the message across. You want to escalate the situation to the point the police have to show up as there will be a verifiable report at the local police station that you showed up to the terminal with the truck.

You should be home or get home to offload your belongnings first. Some companies, as soon as you give notice, will tell you to return the equipment to your nearest terminal or drop yard. They fear so much that the driver will damage equipment, abandon it the moment they find something else, etc. Just make certain you have money in your pocket, your belongings in a safe location, a good exit plan. It might help to have some place lined up before you leave as well so it doesn't hurt your pocket too much.

The last resignation letter I turned in stated Friday is my last day. Gave it to them on Tuesday. We had a meeting (this company loved meetings). I offered to stay on another week or so. But when I said "I can stand handling one more box of your widgets" they got offended that my life wasn't as committed to the widgets as theirs are. They also did things real slow. The job I got was advertised December/January 2011/12. I interviewed and test drove mid/late January. Actually got hired late March. Quit June 8. Now I am scrambling to get back to work after Labor Day!

Lol.... Wow! If I did all that at my current job I would never find another nursing job! Interesting difference in careers.
