If im going to get paid a decent wage and be home all the time compared to most of the greedy, careless and senseless OTR companies that have a 100% turnover rate and lawsuits against their fleece scam programs i would join the Boyscouts even.

Your personal choice....Drivers are a strongly Anti Union bunch...In my opinion a mistake...Drivers and Truck Mechanics ....Are some of the only American Workers not protected by Minim Wage ...and Overtime Laws...Everybody else has had them since WWII...

My personal stance is this Workers..(Drivers)...Should be payed for All of Their Hours....If the Shipper and Receiver want you to work..(Break down pallets..Cross Dock ...Load or unload their freight....Sweep up...Move trailers or anything else besides drive the truck to and from)....They should have to pay you for it....One of the reasons that liked flats over vans and reefers is that they don't exploit you as much....They still do just not as much...

Most of the drivers really have no problem with these issues they just want to be able to work more hours ....Get payed for the hours that they put in...Not So Much....

In my opinion when you work and not get payed....Someone else is getting payed without working...In other words they are getting payed for Your Work...

Why not compare the pay and benefits of union vs. non-union companies? Also, ask union members if they feel they get good representation for their dues? It can be very difficult to get into a union--especially a good one. Organized labor is at its weakest point in history thanks to union busting. For example, some unions still offer real pensions, not 401Ks...

I think your mission should be to find a good job that is compatible with you (and your family). If it's a union job then if you want it yes you would "have" to join. If the job you find does not require you to be in a union then joining one would be kind of a moot point.

I joined the Union in 1969 and never looked back.

    In todays world,

    I don't think I would join.

That was in buffalo ny at the time.

The unions no longer do what they started out to do.

    They are pretty much obsolete.

    However,

that check I receive every month IS nice !!
