it depends, do you have a good work ethic? can you think for yourself? can your skills get you ahead? do you have the ability to negotiate your future? If you answer yes to all 4, then why do you need a Union to help you get things you can get yourself.

My grandparents were both Union members, from the late 40's til they were forced to retire from the mills in Ohio in the early 80's. Both, til the day they died said they knowing what they knew now, would never have joined.

Unions are only good for one thing.

    Driving up prices.

They are only there to get more for the worker, the cost of which is always passed on to the consumer.
    Then the cycle starts again.

I have a news flash ....That happens in Non Union Shops too....Only more...The boss's kid their College Friends....Any pretty young girl that shows up.....I always laugh ...Working three shifts....24/7....Guess who is Desperately Needed on The Day Shift Weekends And Holidays Off....Why The New Hire....

Beautiful Spring and Fall Weather....Guess who is working outside?.....Cold ....Rainy....Hot sun and sweltering heat?....Guess who is inside?

New hire...(Someone special)....Create a job for them...No one else can do it like they can..When they are gone ...someone like you can just assume those duties along with the rest of your duties...

Nothing to do with Union ...It's all Politics....It's just that Trucking Needs More Worker Bees!....Somebody has to Actually Drive The Truck....

The only reason to join a union is if you have a union job. It makes no sense to join, if you don't have a union job.

Unions were very good and the only way to go back in the day, now they are nothing but greed and laziness. politics and have lost touch with what they were originally started for and need an over haul. there are a few companies out there that put union pay and benifits to shame (sysco for example) you will however work your ### off.

    I was a Teamster for 20 years.....

    The good:

    Upgrade School....
    Decent wages....
    Decent health bennies...
    Decent pension plans...

    The bad:

Union contractors always "hired" more than what was required....So get used to waiting at the dock to get dispatched for work....
Unions will tell you who to vote for in an election....And if they find out you voted Republican....You are on the "Sheyat List".....
Get used to "Donation Time" that is....You'll work "12" and get paid for "8"...You complain...You get sent "Down the road" or, if they just want to punish you...You "Stand on the dock"....

I always thought the Teamsters were ok just from my observations of UPS personnel. It seems like they're not chastened for putting effort into their task. Personally, I've only worked under the Food and Commercial workers; made minimum wage AND they took out union dues. I also lived in Flint when Buick City met it's demise. Public perception was that the UAW members were not content at >$25/hr +benefits. GM couldn't profit w/ the complacent inefficiency so they went south. The UAW offered too little too late. The only sympathy garnered was within the union...and Flint at this time is not economically viable.
