You would start with a permit in your home state. Some states require that you have/possess a permit in your home state BEFORE They will issue a non-resident permit.

Some states will offer reciprocity and will accept your homestate as if it was issued in their state as well.

Other times, you can get your home state and a state like either Utah, Pennsylvania or Florida to really pick up more than 30 states that you would now become permitted to carry in.

Some states, you just will never get a permit in. Illinois, New York come to mind and California is a PITA as well.

There are other states like North Dakota where it's actually to your benefit to NOT have a permit at times. They offer open carry, meaning you could even toss it on your dash and so long as you don't have a round in the chamber and magazine out, you are legal. With a permit, you are limited in "public places of gathering" and some sheriff's have interpreted that in the past to include a sidewalk.

I'd half say BS to his statement, especially since there are still some states that do NOT offer a permit to carry or CCW permit.

You do not want to get caught passing through the Navajo Nation with a firearm, they took a guy to jail on US 491 south of Shiprock, N. M. here a while back.

Reservations are an entirely different beast as they are considered a "sovereign nation"

I agree, I just would have never thought of that being an issue, it's easy to be driving along daydreaming and not even notice that you have just crossed in to a reservation.

Do not i repeat do not come to NEWYORK with it NEWYORK does not recognize out of state permits at all.If your caught in NEWYORK with a gun no matter what state your from you will face up to 3 years in jail. This is not me just talking this is a fact even if you can carry in your state you will be prosecuted.Recently a lady from i think tennesse or some other southern state went to ground zero in manhattan, and saw a sign that said no weapons so she asked an officer were she could turn her gun in so she could sight see.She was arrested on the spot and was prosecuted.Lil wayne the rapper was on his tour bus in NEWYORK with a licensed 40 caliber glock and was arrested and sentenced to 1 year.He also had a concealed weapons permit but it was no good in NY.Im not sure but i think Newjersey is the same.

There was a treaty in the 1950's though that basically made it "legal" in that if you are a non-tribal member, you fall under the local or state jurisdiction. If you were tribal, you fell under tribal jurisdiction to help "prevent" such instances.

I'll see if I can find more information on it, but it's back home in my lesson plan for my permit classes.

And even THAT is a sticky point as some tribes accepted and ratified it, others did not, do not and will not accept it.
