Hey folks I've got a few questions on the US oilfields. In February I'll have a year under my belt of driving a 3axle bobtail with a 4000 gallon tank vac truck. I'm thinking of relocating for a year to an area with oilfield work. My lady wants to come but she is concerned about finding work (communications degree) in an area without a whole lot of civilization... As in Dakota and West Texas. Any other hot territories? And lastly what kind of trucks do newer drivers get into? Obviously I only have class b experience but I have hazmat and twic along with the other endorsements.

you might check out the marcellus shale in north central PA, eastren OH, areas. That way you wont be too far from civilization.

You do not have a years worth of countable experience. The companies are looking for tractor trailer class A experience. You may want to try SlumberJ they train.

Based on what i have heard and seen, if you have a pulse and at least a class b,with tanker, chances are you could get a job out here. some companies are actually helping people get their cdl. there seems to be a big demand for water truck drivers, hauling water to frac sites, usually a twelve hour shift. right now, 9/2012, things are a bit slow, but after the election, its expected to pick up again. I work hauling frac sand as a fill in driver, usually over winter and spring. the rest of my time i run local doing other things. So my info may be off a little, as im not up there that often, but i hear from our drivers who are up there all the time. hope that makes sense.

Yea the whole point of me going was to get a experience without going OTR. If that isn't possible I'll just stay here and work for a beverage company and work up to a tt. If I can take my vac truck exp to a 'semi' civilized area for her sake in a few months then that's what I'm going for. Just not sure if I'll get hired on

You should have no problem finding work in Midland/Odessa area with your experience.Your other half should not have a problem either as it is a large area with 150k population.Just be aware housing is difficult to find sometimes.

Get your CDL. The vac trucks I operate have 18 wheels. Then you can work anywhere.
