That's what I thought. I had looked at Mercer before coming to LS, and honestly the only reason i decided on LS was because I worked here before and already knew how things worked. Mercer seems like a very good place to lease on.

Will Mercer bring someone on that has a 1 ton truck and a trailer that can haul up to 10k?

OK, I've read the whole thread and the Mercertown web site. I used to talk with the Mercer hands who hung out at the TA west in Ontario. I have a very good picture of what it's like to work at Mercer. My last BIG QUESTION is -

If you compare the rates you receive with Mercer to the rates you receive in the spot market, meaning broker/load board freight, can a man who knows how to select a load and run his business earn more money with Mercer or with his own authority?

I know that some who've posted here have had their own authority prior to leasing to Mercer and can answer this question. My truck has averaged right at $2.75/mile for all miles this year pulling mostly spot market freight. But this is with a RGN/double drop and probably 50% of the freight being oversize. Take off percentage for the company, cost of permits and the stress and aggravation of dealing with permitting and add about 5 or 6 cents a mile in fuel savings and I'll choose trading for a low pro SD with ramps or a beaver tail and being leased to Mercer for the same net result if I can get it. Plus, spot market freight rarely reflects a fuel surcharge and if/when the economy gets tough again I think the FSC will go a long ways toward keeping a few bucks in the bank.

    SHC Thanks this.

To be completely honest, if you know how to sell your services and are on some brokers "A" list then I think you will be better off on your own authority. I pull a step deck with a 40" deck height, had thought about buying one that was a low profile, but between the extra cost of the trailer and extra maintenance costs associated with the 17.5 tires and brake wear I don't see the return on investment here at Mercer. I do get some spot market freight were I can say what I want to haul it. But not enough to average what you are.
