Actually, I'm just starting my CDL school. It will be months before I take my DMV road test so I'm just planning ahead. I'm prepared to go where the work is. Some pros have told me the toughest places now to find work are in: Florida, the upper NE and upper NW. Ideally, I'd like to drive a non-hazmat tanker.

Schneider hires students for their tanker division. I think Superior Carriers does as well. I think you need Haz for SC though, can't remember about the Pumpkin.

    Thanks Wulfman,

I have my Hazmat endorsement, I just would rather not use it. Strange huh.

Is it possible to have hazmat endorsement before getting CDL or are you taking refresher course?

You can take it with your permit tests. Some states you need the background done first, some let you go ahead and do it.

Tank, non haz-mat implies food grade type of work which in many circumstances (from reading forums) has cheap wages BUT lots of miles....the milk haulers. Some of the "dry bulk" food guys make more but they make require you to use your haz-mat.

Right now is the beginning of the busy season. Now through the day after Xmas is a good time to be on the road. Most drivers will try to run as hard as they can and as much as they can and then after Xmas is when they will take their home time. Gotta get it while its good! You never want to take home time when the freight is good or when you are on a roll. It will surely throw a wrench right in the old gears! Know what you are doing and know how to set yourself up correctly and you can make really good money!

As for learning to drive its also a good time. Not only will you be busy and running good miles but you will get some good training in winter type driving.

All in all its a good time to get into trucking!
